Worms & Whisky & Beer - A Marriage in Heaven? What's not to like?

Worms & Whisky & Beer - A Marriage in Heaven? What's not to like?

Q. Could this potentially be the largest vermicomposting operation in Scotland?

A. Aye! It will be.

In collaboration with Pictish Worms this local whisky distillery and brewery intends to transform all its bio waste from producing high quality beverages into vermicast, vermicompost and valuable soil amendment. With an annual output of a minimum of circa 200 tonnes of biowaste the worms cant wait to get their teeth or should I say gums into!

As a vermiculturist, who likes a good dram or two or three and good crafted beer, I cant think of a better initiative to throw all my resources behind. It will significantly reduce my guilt at drinking alcohol in the knowledge that the more I drink it will be contributing towards helping this company and global warming!

Okay, that was tongue in cheek, however I have much respect to a company that is seriously conscious about how environmentally friendly its inputs and outputs are and how it can make a difference.

On this scale and with this particular niche of biowaste I would invite others to join us in our journey. If you are a student, a researcher, industry supporter, funding or governmental body, philanthropist who likes whisky, beer, the planet or just worms please get in touch.

As I raise yet another glass in excited anticipation of this project, I do so with the word 'Sláinte' which is Gaelic for 'health' So here is to your health, my health, the worms health and the health of the soil
