On Monday, 53-year-old Pascale Cecile Veronique Ferrier was arrested for her involvement in sending an envelope addressed to the White House that reportedly contained the poison ricin. Ferrier is also accused of sending similar envelopes containing the poison to law enforcement agencies in Texas. Officials said that Ferrier was arrested at the New York and Canadian border, and was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing near Buffalo, and is expected to face federal charges. Ferrier also was reportedly carrying a firearm when she was arrested illegally transporting a firearm across state and country lines. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the letter addressed to the White House reportedly originated in Canada, and was intercepted by a government facility that screens mail addressed to the White House and U.S. President Donald Trump. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies ricin as a “Category B bioterrorism agent and a Schedule number 1 chemical warfare agent.” Ricin is derived from the castor bean plant and is lethal upon exposure since there is no antidote. In 2018, authorities arrested a 39-year-old male who admitted to attempting to send four envelopes containing ground-up castor beans to President Trump and members of his administration.
