Worldskills UK Digital Construction Competition
In 2019, Digital Construction student Sophie Orr took part in the UK’s first official competition for Building Information Modelling at WorldSkills UK Live in the Birmingham NEC in front of 75,000 attendees. Going on to win the Gold Medal, Sophie followed up on her success by also being awarded the BIM Show Live ‘Rising Star’ award in the same year.
Now working with Sheppard Robson in Glasgow as an Architectural Technologist /BIM Coordinator, Sophie has been appointed as one of three lead judges for the upcoming WorldSkills UK Digital Construction competitions in 2021.
Progressing to judge the competitions from first entering as a student is a real testament to Sophie’s knowledge and skills in Digital Construction. When speaking about her competition experiences, she said “Competing in and winning the first official Worldskills UK BIM competition has given me the confidence and knowledge I needed to take my skills and efficiently apply them within my current role in Sheppard Robson. It has taught me how to work well under pressure as well as giving me practice of real life BIM processes which I now carry out every day in my workplace. I am so grateful for everything the competition and my mentors have taught me and I hope to pass on some of this knowledge within the next competition in my role as a judge”.
Sheppard Robson is one of the UK’s most established architectural practices, with a reputation for thoughtful and responsible designs. In the practice’s 80-year history, Sheppard Robson has designed award-winning architecture, interior design and masterplanning projects around the world, building a strong reputation across numerous typologies ;including office, education, residential, healthcare, science and retail projects.
This year’s Digital Construction competition is an evolution of the BIM Competition, and is a direct reaction to on-going concerns about the data skills gap, developed with input from leading industry professionals including this year’s judges. On top of their developmental roles, they are responsible for leading the validation of competitors final submissions and will ultimately be responsible for awarding points and awarding final positions in the Digital Construction National Qualifiers as well as the National Finals.
