Houtenbos has worked with countless celebrities like Lady Gaga, and his creations have been featured in numerous Vogue magazines, but what does he have to say to those aspiring to achieve similar success?

Houtenbos’s career began with a surprise invitation to a New York salon, which led to a chance test by stylists. He recalls this important event, sharing, “You’ve got one door, and you’ve got another door. I took the door with the mistaken identity and made the best of it. I have no idea what’s behind the other door.” This choice, though accidental, set him on the path to greatness.

He emphasizes the importance of consistent excellence in gaining recognition. “People slowly but surely can’t ignore you anymore because your work becomes visible and noted by a bigger and bigger audience,” he explains. Yet, it’s not just about skill; he advises aspiring professionals to “be true to yourself. Don’t worry about looking too hard because you are already yourself; just recognize it and follow the cues.”

Perhaps the most striking element of Houtenbos’s philosophy is his belief in kindness. “There is only one answer, man. Don’t be too greedy and please be kind. Friendly to each other. There is no reason not to be friendly to each other. No reason not to be kind to each other. Bottom line as far as I can see it.”
