Many people including many professional do badly at networking. They attend many business and professional events in the name of networking but they end up socialising instead of networking. Making friends at events is great, but it is the worst objective for professionals and business people especially when you pay money to attend such events.

Networking, and real networking, must produce practical business and professional results. Many people think collecting as many business cards and having a long list of people's names from an event is a measure of great networking. This is wrong and a waste of time.
