The DHC-515 Firefighter: A Lifesaving Aircraft Returns to the Skies
As wildfires worsen across the globe, the return of the DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft couldn't have come at a more critical time. This amphibious plane, an upgraded version of the famed Canadair firefighting aircraft, is once again in production—responding to an urgent, worldwide need for more powerful aerial firefighting tools. With wildfires now burning on an unprecedented scale, especially since 2023, when fires scorched an area the size of Nicaragua, the importance of a reliable, efficient water bomber like the DHC-515 has never been clearer.
The Power and Speed of the DHC-515
Built for the rigors of modern firefighting, the DHC-515 can carry a massive 7,000 liters (1,850 gallons) of water. It’s designed for quick action, scooping water in just 12 seconds from nearby bodies of water and flying at speeds over 200 mph. This combination of speed and capacity makes it one of the most effective tools for aerial firefighting, allowing crews to drop water swiftly over large fire zones.
What sets the DHC-515 apart from its predecessors are its advanced features. Enhanced avionics and improved water-dropping technology ensure greater precision, while better corrosion protection extends the aircraft’s operational life in tough environments. These upgrades mean that the plane can fly more missions, for longer, with more accuracy—a crucial advantage as fire seasons grow more intense and prolonged.

Meeting a Growing Demand
De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, which acquired the rights to the Canadair line in 2016, is stepping up production of the DHC-515. With the global demand for firefighting aircraft now outstripping supply, this plane is set to play a key role in bridging that gap. European countries are leading the charge, with Greece placing an order for seven units and the European Union aiming to acquire 12 more. The growing urgency for resources like the DHC-515 highlights how climate change is reshaping national and international strategies for fire management.
A Vital Tool for a Changing Climate
The resurgence of the DHC-515 Firefighter marks an important milestone in the fight against wildfires, which have become fiercer and more frequent as global temperatures rise. Its return to production is not just a response to current demand but a forward-looking investment in future fire management. Governments and agencies across the world are scrambling to secure every available tool, and with its speed, capacity, and advanced features, the DHC-515 stands ready to meet the challenge.

6 个ćśThanks for sharing this ???? Due to the increasing effects of global warming, I believe that investment in such firefighting equipment will be necessary in countries such as Turkiye and Greece, which are intensively struggling with large forest fires that negatively affect wildlife, ecosystems and also human life. So if you don’t mind I would love to share these news ??
