E-COMMERCE NEWS

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has published a new agreement text on global e-commerce. Eighty countries have reached an agreement on e-commerce. The text of the new agreement on e-commerce, published on July 26, was announced after the completion of five years of negotiations between the World Trade Organization (WTO)'s large and some member countries, jointly organized by Australia, Japan and Singapore. The next phase of this agreement includes the integration of these basic rules into the WTO system. Türkiye and the USA are not among the signatory countries.


Deputy Minister of Trade Mahmut Gürcan made important statements regarding the regulations to be made in the e-commerce law. Drawing attention to the market share of Chinese trade giants Temu and Shein in Türkiye, Gürcan said, “We planned to enact this law against their waging war on SMEs in Türkiye.” Gürcan also provided information about the changes in the license fee calculations of e-commerce platforms.


E-commerce platforms are being given the authority to collect taxes on behalf of the Ministry of Finance. Accordingly, marketplaces will withhold tax from 300,000 suppliers who supply products. The application, which aims to ensure tax security on e-commerce platforms, is included in the new tax law. The application, which turns e-commerce platforms into “tax liable” through “pre-procurement,” is expected to be implemented on January 1, 2025.


The United Brands Association (BMD) drew attention to e-commerce platforms that enter Türkiye from the Far East with low customs duties. Reminding that many products in Türkiye have become even more expensive than in Europe due to high costs, BMD President Sinan ?ncel said, “In such a period, Far Eastern e-commerce platforms have started to bring products with low customs duties. Since these platforms pay taxes on their earnings in their own countries, a huge unfair competition is created.”


Amazon is facing tax and labor charges in Italy. Italian tax authorities have seized €121 million ($131 million) worth of e-commerce giant Amazon’s Italian unit over allegations of tax and labor violations. The company said it complied with all relevant regulations in response to the allegations.


A study by researchers at George Washington University in Washington, DC, found that people living in communities near large e-commerce warehouses are 20 percent more exposed to traffic-related air pollutants.


OTO, the leading cargo management platform in Türkiye and the MENA region, raised $8 million in a Series A financing round led by Sanabil Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), with participation from Sadu Capital, Iliad Partners, Propeller and Soma Capital. OTO had previously raised $3.3 million in investment from venture capital funds and angel investors such as MEVP, Derayah Ventures and 500 Global.
