Worldcoin Madness Begins

Sam Altman , the man who?stole the internet ?to create?ChatGPT , is now?scanning eyeballs ?with?Worldcoin ?– an orb, a token, and wealth for everyone.
This is, perhaps, one of the most daring projects to be ever rolled out, challenging the global financial system, regulators and markets.?
Launched on July 24 (Monday), Worldcoin – backed by?Andreessen Horowitz ?(a16z ) – will be made available in 35 cities, across 20 countries, during its initial rollout phase. Even before the launch, it garnered over 2 million sign-ups, across the globe,?except in its home country, the US , while other countries continue to raise?ethical ?and?privacy concerns.?
Surprisingly,?India , which has not been a big fan of cryptocurrencies, is leading the?adoption of Worldcoin’s identity verification technology , spanning?18 locations. ?Bengaluru folks who want to witness the Worldcoin experience can head to the Galleria Mall (Yelahanka), Mantri Square Mall (Malleshwaram), and Vega City Mall (JP Nagar). AIM visited some of these locations over the weekend, and sadly, they were all temporarily shut down due to?poor crowd management .
Looks like India, alongside other third-world and emerging economies, is serving as a Worldcoin testing ground for Altman’s ‘dystopian’ future experiments.?
AI Job Losses on the Rise?
Just a few days ago, Altman?said ?that jobs will surely be gone due to AI. He added that a lot of people working on AI ‘pretend’ that it is only going to be for the good of humans, act like a supplement for them, and won’t replace anyone at their jobs. But “jobs are definitely going to go away, full stop”.?
Recently, executive outplacement and career consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, attributed?4000 job losses ?in May to AI. Telecom company British Telecommunications also announced that over 55,000 jobs will be cut by the end of the decade, out of which, a fifth will be in customer service where?AI will replace staff . In India, a digital commerce startup,?Dukaan , in a?viral tweet , announced that it?recently laid off 90% of its support staff ?replacing them with their new AI chatbot. Goldman Sachs also stated that?300 million full-time jobs ?across the globe could be disrupted – not necessarily replaced – by AI.?
Solution: Worldcoin??
Two years ago, Altman had written an engaging blog on ‘Moore’s Law of Everything ’, which emphasised the need for a solution such as?Worldcoin ?to shift power from labour to capital to prevent widespread negative consequences, including job losses due to AI. He suggested designing a system that embraces this future and implements fair taxation on assets like companies and lands to distribute wealth equitably.?
Altman said that the pace of innovation will accelerate, creating vast wealth, but?proper policy adjustments ?are crucial to ensure more people can benefit from these changes and improve their standard of living. He also urged policymakers to be forward-thinking and adapt to the radically different society that will emerge from this technological shift. Ignoring the impending transformation could lead to policy failures similar to how organising principles of past societies would not be effective in today’s world.?
While regulators and policymakers across the globe are?slowly waking up to a new AI reality , kudos to Uncle Sam for at least trying. “Like any ambitious project, maybe it works out and maybe it doesn’t, but trying stuff like this is how progress happens,”?said ?Altman, adding that they thrive on haters' energy. “Please keep it coming!”
