World Youth Skill Day 2022

World Youth Skill Day 2022

It is the greatest saying that the future of our planet lies on the shoulders of the youth. Therefore, it is essential to think about the quality of opportunity, skills, and education the present youth is receiving. It is often seen that young individuals often face challenges, poor employment opportunities, and disturbances in the transition from school to work life. Also, the larger youth population faces unemployment and underemployment, and they are often underpaid. Young women have it shoddier and they are often discriminated against in many workplaces. To overcome the concerns and problems faced by youth World Youth Skills Day is annually celebrated on July 15.

Since 2014, when the United Nations acknowledged its existence, it has been celebrated. World Youth Skills Day aims to "highlight the strategic significance of training young people with skills for employment, better work, and entrepreneurship," according to the United Nations. This day offers young people the opportunity for conversation with educational institutions, businesses, governments, and development partners and helps create skills for decent work, employment, and entrepreneurship. The importance of young skill development has increased as the world gradually shifts to sustainable development.

People who believe in the importance of vocational education for the youth, believe that learning and gaining skills is a continuous process, and those who rely on that youth have access to such vocational and skill-based education are those who celebrate this day.

This year World Youth Skills Day 2022 focuses on “Transforming Youth Skills for the Future” and promotes youth skills development. "Reimagining youth skills post-epidemic" was the subject for World Youth Skills Day 2021, which intended to assist youth to recover both skills- and emotion-wise after the devastation wrought by the OVID-19 pandemic.

The day also provides a pathway between the youths and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, firms, developers, and policymakers and also highlights the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for their secure future.

History and Timeline

This day was started to promote employment opportunities, reduce unemployment, and promote TVET for the youth. TVET offers a lot of advantages over traditional training methods and offers more favorable opportunities, job satisfaction, higher-income jobs, and helps youngsters to continue learning for as long as they wanted.

World Youth Skills Day is of Vital Importance

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the young employment rate by 8.7% worldwide. Due to the pandemic, more than 1 in 6 young people are unemployed or unable to work because their businesses have closed or lost business. During the tough times, only talented and skillful individuals mostly worked and generated money in this difficult environment.

Positive Shift Can Be Seen

This day has become an essential movement that helps in spreading awareness and the importance of vocational education. It has also evolved like a sort of culture on its own. Numerous online platforms, applications, and training programs have emerged over the years to give this knowledge in a readily accessible and cost-effective manner. By combining these courses with high school and college education, a positive shift seems to be occurring.
