The world is wrong about the English Language.

(ok, wrong is a strong word. let me rephrase it, then: unbalanced). HERE’S WHY!

English is from and for everyone. Therefore, we are all foreigners and/or natives, at the same time.

7 billion people - give or take.?

Do you know how many people speak English natively? Well, without even going through actual numbers, I believe it is very clear to anyone the answer is: fewer than the ones who speak it as a foreign language.

The point here is the following: if there is a greater majority of so-cal non-natives, why do we still experience some noise about speaking correctly, sounding like a native or not communicating at all because of lack of confidence?

Don’t get me wrong, this does not mean native speakers are guilty here. There a lot of people among both groups who believe there is only one way to speak the language. Those who fail to understand that language is not set in stone. Language is movement.

The English language has been changing over the years. And now is clear that there are some particularities to speech in different parts of the world of non-natives - the same way we can perceive that among the native nations.

So, why don’t we take our chances in being part of the transformation and impact others more positively by reframing our thinking?

English is universally global and especifically local. Global in a way it connects people from many different parts of the world. Local because two human beings sitting in a classroom somewhere in the globe can somehow bond over a quick chat in the lingua franca. What matters the most, in both forms of conversation, is that there should be effective communication.

‘What is effective communication?’, you ask.

Well, my definition of communication is the expression and exchange of thoughts, emotions and ideas through sounds, symbols, signs and languages.

Simple like that.

So,for this to happen in a succesful way the message has to be clear, understood and acknowledged by everyone involved. You see, I am not saying a message well-conveyed should necessarily be agreed on, but people should recognize to the point they are able to talk about it.
