World Sustainable Transport Day

Transportation is vital for promoting connectivity, trade, economic growth and employment. Without it, millions would go without the items they need to live. Although the industry is essential for so many, the impacts of it has negatively affected our environments for years. World Sustainable Transport Day was created to recognize and share the important role of safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems globally.

At Marine Atlantic, we’re actively working to minimize our impact on the environments in which we operate. The work our team is doing is helping us move towards our goals of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to improve our practices around sustainability.

One way we’re doing this is through our participation in the Green Marine program. Green Marine is a rigorous, transparent, and inclusive certification program that targets prioritized environmental issues such as greenhouse gases, community impacts, and water and land pollution. Our involvement in the program provides us with direction and support into how we can improve the environmental impact that our vessels and buildings have on their surroundings.

Our new vessel, the Ala’suinu, will also help us continue to reduce our impact. The vessel will have state-of-the-art features that will enhance accessibility and passenger experience, while having a lessened impact on our environment. The Ala’suinu will include green ship technology, such as dual-fuel capacity and supplemental batter power, making it more energy efficient.?

The work we’re doing to reduce our emissions is also happening on our land operations. As part of our Electric Vehicle Strategy, Marine Atlantic is working to replace all company vehicles with electric vehicles. We’ve also introduced charging stations at our terminals and administrative buildings to support employees and passengers with electric or hybrid vehicles.

Changing the norm isn’t always an easy thing to do, but the impact of change can be huge. We’re proud to be implementing positive changes to our organization and operations so we can continue to serve our essential service safely and responsibly.
