World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day

In July 2021 I lost my younger brother Liam (27) to suicide. Liam was a wonderful boy, my best friend and I miss him more than I could ever explain. He felt trapped, that he couldn’t speak to anyone, pressured and with nowhere else to go, which unfortunately led to his death. What can we do to change this?

Changing the Narrative Around Suicide

Suicide is a tough topic, but it’s one we need to talk about more openly. Changing the way we discuss it can help break down the stigma and support people who are struggling.

The Importance of Open Conversations

Many people hesitate to talk about suicide, fearing it might make things worse. But the truth is, having these conversations can actually help. When we talk openly, we give people a chance to share their feelings and seek help. I feel in a fortunate position where if I am struggling I can speak to my older brothers, particularly after what happened to Liam.

Young Men and Mental Health

While suicide impacts everyone, young men are particularly at risk. Here’s why:

  • Masculine Norms: Society often tells men to be tough and not show emotions. This can make it hard for them to reach out for support when they need it most.
  • Financial Pressure: Young men often feel the weight of being providers, which can lead to stress and anxiety, especially in tough economic times.
  • Isolation: Many young men struggle to build strong support networks, leaving them feeling lonely and disconnected.

Shifting the Focus

To help young men, we need to:

  1. Encourage them to express their feelings and show vulnerability.
  2. Create mental health services that feel welcoming and relatable.
  3. Challenge the idea that being a man means being ‘tough’ and not showing emotion.
  4. Educate everyone about the signs of someone in distress and how to help.

A Broader Approach

While we focus on young men, let’s not forget that suicide affects all groups. A well-rounded approach to prevention should include:

  • Better access to mental health resources for everyone
  • Campaigns to reduce stigma
  • Training for those in healthcare and community roles
  • Support for families and friends of those at risk

By changing the conversation around suicide and mental health, we can create a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength. With a focus on young men and a broader understanding of the issue, we can make a real difference and save lives.
