Stop and Just Breathe: The Overlooked Key to Managing Workplace Overwhelm
We've all been there. That moment when your inbox is a ticking time bomb, your Slack notifications are going off like fireworks, and your to-do list looks like a manuscript. Your boss wants that report by end-of-day, and a team meeting has just been scheduled for "urgent discussions." Overwhelm isn't just knocking on the door; it's barged right in.
The Breaking Point
You're pulled into spontaneous meetings, dealing with urgent emails, and handling high-priority tasks that just keep multiplying. It’s like you’re juggling flaming torches, and someone keeps tossing in chainsaws. What do you do when it feels like your work-life is a sped-up video, and there’s no pause button?
You stop. And you breathe.
Hitting the "Pause" Button
I know what you're thinking. "Stop and breathe? I don't have time to breathe!" But bear with me for a minute. I don't possess magical powers to halt the Earth's rotation, but I've learned that I can press the pause button on the chaos, even if it's just for a few minutes.
Just like Neo in "The Matrix," I mute the ruckus both inside and outside my head. Sometimes I'll even step out of my office and take a stroll around the building. It's amazing how much a little fresh air can clear your mind. When I get back, the Everest of tasks that seemed unconquerable now just looks like a list on a piece of paper. Because that’s all it really is—a list.
The Power of Perspective
One of the things that makes a heap of tasks seem so daunting is our emotional attachment to them. We feel burdened, not necessarily because the tasks are impossible to do, but because we fear failure. Recognize that you’re not alone; you have a team to share ideas with, to delegate tasks to, and even someone above you whom you can approach for extensions on deadlines. It’s not just your battle; it’s a team effort.

Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Sanity
Prioritize the Small Tasks: The minor stuff that takes five minutes or less? Do it immediately. These quick wins create a momentum that makes tackling the bigger tasks feel less daunting.
Seek Collaboration: If there are tasks that can be done more efficiently with teamwork, delegate or ask for help. Many hands make light work, after all.
Negotiate Deadlines: If it's evident that you’re not going to make a deadline, it’s better to ask for an extension earlier rather than later. The worst they can say is no, but at least you asked.
Regain Focus: Remove distractions, whether it’s silencing your phone or closing irrelevant tabs on your computer. The more focused you are, the quicker you’ll get through your tasks.
Remember, if you're not managing your desk, then your desk is managing you, and that's where the chaos begins and ends.
?So, the next time you find yourself buried under a mountain of tasks and deadlines, just remember to stop and breathe. You’re more in control than you think.

1 年Great article Bill. With the new WFH office, it's hard to stop working and take a breath. I find that scheduling a lunch and blocking it off has helped me tremendously.

1 年Great advise and perspective. I love the team idea of leaning on your team if the task allows, that's what we are here for. Also, tackling some small tasks to create momentum is spot on. I definitely use this strategy in life and at work. Thanks for sharing. Great post as always Bill!
