Today we celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development, which highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives, and as someone who is passionate about education, specifically STEAM subjects, we need to encourage children who have a curious and creative mindset to embrace this day and explore various careers they can pursue in the science field.
The theme for 2023’s commemoration is Building Trust in Science. ?This trust in science fuels the development and application of evidence-based solutions to our world’s multifaceted challenges, including environmental and social issues. We live in a world where people rely on social media for information and sometimes refer to ‘alternative facts’, but enhancing trust in science strengthens science-based policy decisions and society’s support for their application.
The South African government, through its Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), tabled a R10.9 billion budget for 2023/24. The country’s theme in this regard is: “Using science, technology, and innovation to grow our country and together resolve its challenges.” A milestone worth noting and celebrating is the DSI’s?Indigenous Knowledge Programme, which seeks to protect and promote the country's indigenous knowledge systems.? To date, approximately 300 students have graduated in this field, and there are plans to increase the number of universities offering this qualification. Innovation that uses local knowledge, lived experience and skills is critical.

An important player in South Africa’s science field is the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a world-class African research and development organisation that undertakes directed, multidisciplinary research and technological innovation that contributes to the improved quality of life of South Africans.?I’d like us to celebrate and acknowledge the important role this organisation in putting South Africa on the global map of science and innovation, and they indeed affirm the theme of this year’s commemoration: building trust in science
