World Rewilding Day 2023

World Rewilding Day 2023

At Wylde Connections we are passionate not only about protecting nature but allowing it to recover and that is why World Rewilding Day is so important. On March 20, people come together from around the world to secure a more sustainable future by making space for nature.?

?The annual event may be fairly new, but it has already gained significant momentum. It was launched by the Global Rewilding Alliance at the signing of the ‘Global Rewilding Charter’ in March 2021. It coincided with the start of the United Nations’ Decade of Ecosystem Restoration to focus minds on tackling the global environmental crisis.?

?In a nutshell, rewilding is about helping nature help itself through large scale restoration. The key is to allow natural processes to restore degraded landscapes. As a helping hand we can help create the right conditions, be it by cleaning up rivers, reintroducing lost species, or allowing natural forest regeneration.?

?Letting nature take its course makes sense on so many levels. We all love to get out and enjoy everything the natural world has to offer. By enhancing as well as protecting biodiversity, we can ensure that future generations have access to the sights, sounds and smells of nature. At the same time, these ecosystems can help us mitigate climate change and bring a host of other benefits such as fertile soil, clean air, fresh water and resilience to disease.?

?According to the UN, we must scale up rewilding and restore an area the size of China to meet commitments. That means restoring at least 1bn hectares of land by 2030, as well as allowing our blue planet to undergo a similar healing process.??

?The shocking truth is that humans use around 1.6 times the resources that nature can sustainably renew every year. Biodiversity loss not only affects our rich array of species, but it threatens human health, food supply and livelihoods.?

?The theme for World Rewilding Day 2023 is #RewildingHope . We have the skills and resources to make a difference and is the responsibility of governments, the business community and individuals alike to play their part.?

?Here are some top tips to support rewilding:?

  • ?Make a donation to Rewilding Britain - https://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/donate ?
  • Volunteer for a range of rewilding activities in your local area, be it tree planting, or cleaning up waterways.?
  • Whether you have a garden, a small holding or larger green space, take time to understand what lives in it, what species it supports and how best to help them thrive. Seek advice and support before making any decisions about its future.?
  • Create space for nature. Could you put some space aside for a wildflower meadow, or a pond??
  • Let your lawn grow. Keep the mower in the shed and sit back and enjoy watching nature take its course.?
  • Explore ways that you might reintroduce native species of flora and fauna.?
  • Keep a diary of how rewilding has changed your landscape and communicate what you have achieved with as many people as possible.?
