The world revolves around ME or at least it should? Expectations, Perceptions and the Reality of SAFE

Holding my grandson, of course the world revolves around me. But what does my happiness have to do with safe, or in other words “being safe”? You raise your kids or at least try do and as they grow up you have to resolve yourself to the fact that you can’t protect your children from everything whether they are 800 miles away or right next to you. Then you start worrying all over again when you become a grandparent.
Is it just our young who have inhibited or false expectations and perceptions of safe?
Expectations, Perceptions and the Reality of Safe as we grow up
· That looks fun to play with.
· I can reach/climb/jump that.
· That looks tasty.
· This will fit in my nose.
· What car, I just want to run across the street.
· Let’s try this just once, it can’t hurt.
· Okay, I will do it because you dare me.
· I have mad driving skills.
· I can drive buzzed.
· Training, Rules, Procedures and PPE are for the other people. I can do this safely without getting hurt.
Expectations, Perceptions and the Reality of Safe as we parent and manage SAFE
· Careful, you might break the baby.
· What did you do to the baby, give him here?
· She can do that by herself.
· Who would have thought he could to that?
· She should have used her common sense.
· Everybody knows that was unsafe.
· He has mad skills, just let him get the job done and leave him alone.
From experience, the world appears to revolve around more people than ME. Whether a parent or a manager, you still have to admit to yourself that you can’t protect your children/ employees from everything whether they are 800 miles away or right next to you. As a manager and a parent there is also more accountability (ownership) of keeping people safe. There will always be a tradeoff of to let them do their tasks verses why did I let them get into that situation when I could have stopped it. Plus, there are also more regulatory requirements tied to the size of the population that you are managing and the hazards involved.
So why this post? At one time or another in our lives, we think the world revolves around us and that protections are the responsibility of the other people. At one time or another in our lives, we think “not my problem, that person should have known better." This is why I love what I do, teaching people to figure out where the world revolves when it comes to problem solving and safe. We are all in the world and we all impact each other. We all have a role to play to be safe. Take care of each other, there is only one you and one world
