A world of possibilities

Each year brings with it the promise of a new beginning, a new start, a blank slate. Excited at the prospect of what the future holds, the spirit of optimism despite challenges runs high at the beginning of each year. How different life would be if we were to have this outlook throughout the year!
“When nothing is sure, everything is possible” – Margaret Drabble
The very idea of uncertainty, not knowing what's down the road, often makes people anxious and jittery. We fail to realize that uncertainty paves the way for infinite possibilities! Life becomes much more interesting when we realize that each new day brings with it the hope and possibility of achieving everything we ever hope and dream for.
There are many feel-good stories that make you believe in the power of endless possibilities. I instantly recall the exciting finish at the Australian Open, wherein Rafael Nadal emerged victorious to win his 21st grand slam title. The win proved to be a fitting comeback, even as the odds were stacked against him especially since he returned to the court from a chronic injury and trailed by two sets.
Nadal’s victory at the Australian Open is one of many stories that highlight the power of perseverance and motivation. Despite being out of action and recovering from injury, all he did was to step back, stay focused on the goal and work towards it.
Speaking of believing in oneself and seizing opportunities I am reminded of two stories from closer home. Among the many initiatives supported by the Cipla Foundation, skilling is one that enables individuals to realize their aspirations productively, to earn independently, to live with dignity. Ajay and Naresh Kumari are two such individuals who took the chance to better their lives.

Coming from a humble background, Ajay had resigned to life as a daily-wage labourer, supporting his large joint family. Things changed after he graduated with BSc in pharmacy from Baddi University, and his horizons have broadened substantially.
Similarly, the responsibility of a nine-member household fell on the shoulders of Naresh Kumari after her husband (who was the sole earning member) was diagnosed with a medical condition that didn’t allow him to work. Naresh took matters into her hands, signed up and gained expertise in an industrial sewing course, that boosted her morale to generate income for her family.
So, when the road ahead looks uncertain and the future looks cloudy, take a step back, sit out the storm, don’t be daunted and remain steadfast. Take your time, retool, rethink, re-plan your goals if you must, but don’t give up. Believe in yourself, your purpose, your abilities. Be resolute and keep an open mind. You never know what good things tomorrow may bring. Hold onto hope, for the best is yet to come.
