The world population doubles in 48 years, crosses 8 billion today

the world population crossed the milestone of 8 billion on Tuesday, November 15. From a 4 billion mark in 1974, global population has doubled in 48 years.

“India, the largest contributor to the 8 billion, will surpass China, which was the second largest contributor and whose contribution to the next billion will be negative, as the world's most populous nation by 2023,” the UN sexual and reproductive health agency said.

However, the population explosion witnessed in the past few decades will ease in this century as per the UN data. With lower birth rates, the population is expected to cross 10 billion only by the end of this century in 2100.

The number of human beings inhabiting the earth is set to cross the 8-billion mark today, November 15, 2022. The population growth has been led by Asian countries, especially India and China, in recent years.

The global population hit the one billion mark in 1804. It took another 126 years to hit the second billion in 1930, and another 30 years to hit the third. The fourth billion just took 14 years, while the fifth billion was even faster at 13 years.

In less than 100 years since 1930, the world population has grown four times and will cross 8 billion in a few hours.??

India has been the largest contributor in taking the global population from 7 billion to 8 billion in the last 12 years. United Nations Population Fund said that Asia and Africa drove much of that growth and is expected to drive the next billion, while Europe's contribution will be negative due to declining population.

However, China’s population growth is set to decelerate, while India’s numbers will continue to grow, taking it to the top of the list in less than one year’s time.?

The global population reached 3 billion mark in 1960, 4 billion in 1975, 5 billion in 1987, 6 billion in 1999, and 7 billion in 2011. The UN estimates suggest that it will take approximately 15 years for the population to reach 9 billion.

In 2022 China and India account for over a third of the world’s population, with China‘s share at 18.2 per cent and India’s at 17.7 per cent. The US and Indonesia follow with 4.2 per cent and 3.5 per cent share of the global population.

This is expected to change by 2050, with India having the world’s highest population share at 16.8 per cent, while China’s population share would have declined by over 4.2 per cent.??

With the global population growing at its slowest rate since World War II, it is projected to peak at around 10.4 billion during the 2080s and to stay at that level until 2100.

More than half of the projected increase in global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries: Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania. The 46 least developed countries are among the world’s fastest-growing in terms of population and many are expected to double in population between 2022 and 2050.

According to UN estimates, India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023.
