World Population Day: Why everyone must be counted as they are | Support for survivors of sexual violence in Mali | More

Today, as we mark World Population Day, we list four reasons why every member of the human family, now 8 billion strong around the globe, must be counted as they are. Yet for millions — the world’s most vulnerable among them — this right continues to go unrealized. "For humanity to progress, people must be counted, wherever they are and whoever they are — in all their diversity," UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem says. We introduce some of the census surveyors who are doing just that, collecting data with sensitivity and care. Meanwhile, a joint UN statement calls upon the global community to strengthen access to a comprehensive package of sexual and reproductive health services as part of universal health coverage. In Mali, 15-year-old Maiga is one of many women and girls receiving support for physical, sexual and psychological violence at a crucial health care centre; she shares her deeply personal story. In Zambia, amid devastating drought, cases of child marriage, HIV and hunger are on the rise for women and girls, and UNFPA is providing support for mobile clinics. Thanks for reading.

I am delighted to have chaired the World Population Day commemoration in my country. It is indeed worth celebrating. We must redouble our efforts as stakeholders in our shared goals of improving the quality of life of all people.

This is a sad scenario. As world population day is celebrated, my country (PNG) carried out its national census this year after delayed since 2020. The effectiveness for the roll out of the National census is very poor.
