World Population Day is observed on the 11th of July annually. The theme for 2024 is 'Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone' which reminds us of "investing in data collection which is important to understanding problems, tailoring solutions, and driving progress". This day provides a platform to foster discussions and raise awareness about the impact of population dynamics on socio-economic development, environmental sustainability, and individual well-being and serves as a reminder that our growing population presents both challenges and opportunities that require our attention and proactive measures.
“For humanity to progress, people must be counted, wherever they are and whoever they are – in all their diversity. To end inequality, to find and grow peace and prosperity, and to weave more threads of hope, the world needs to do more for inclusion. To that end, as we mark World Population Day this year, the importance of collecting inclusive data – counting everyone, everywhere, as they are – takes the spotlight." [United Nations Population Fund]
"Over the past three decades, societies around the world have made remarkable progress in improving population data gathering, analysis, and use. New population figures, disaggregated by age, ethnicity, gender, and other factors, now reflect the diversity of our societies more accurately.
These advancements have significantly enhanced the delivery of health care globally, leading to substantial improvements and the ability to exercise rights and choices. Increasingly, new technologies are enabling more detailed and timely measurement of people's experiences than ever before. However, the most marginalized communities remain underrepresented in data, profoundly affecting their lives and well-being.
World Population Day 2024 is a moment to ask who is still going uncounted and why – and what this costs individuals, societies, and our global efforts to leave no one behind. It is also a moment for all of us to commit to doing more to ensure that our data systems capture the full range of human diversity so that everyone is seen, can exercise their human rights and can reach their full potential.
To realize the rights and choices of those on the margins of our societies, we must count them – because everyone counts. Our rich human tapestry is only as strong as its weakest thread. When data and other systems work for those on the margins, they work for everyone. This is how we accelerate progress for all." [United Nations]
This World Population Day, we must acknowledge and integrate data-driven decision-making in tackling global crises like inequality, climate change and inaccessibility to ensure inclusion, climate action and universal accessibility by employing real-time disaggregated data for effective law and policy formulation and implementation.
In this respect, we request the government to take due cognizance of the 'Charter of Demands: Call to Action for Disability Justice' [?????? ????-????: ????????? ????? ????? (???-??-?????) ?? ??? ??????]?which includes the demand for a "Periodic National Disability Census and Real-Time Tracker Dashboard for Disaggregated Data." Visual/Image Description [Alt Text]:
On a notepad template with a dark blue header and golden pins, the logos of The Sangyan, Build Forward Better Campaign, and Poornamidam are placed at the centre along with their respective mottos.
Following is a white-paper texture background, with handwritten font texts that read: "World Population Day; 11th July Annually; and ‘Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone’." In the centre is the circular element of the Human Chain representing the World Population with another element within it of the human population forming a tree shape in multiple colours. Both elements are in 'Origami' paper-craft form. At the bottom are the #BuildForwardBetter and #WeAllBelong hashtags.
