World Patient Safety Day September 2024 - Improving diagnosis for patient safety.

Get it right, make it safe!

In May 2019, all 194 WHO Member States at the 72nd World Health Assembly came together to endorse the establishment of the World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) to be marked annually on 17th September. The objectives of the World Patient Safety Day are to enhance global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in health care safety, and promote global action to prevent and reduce avoidable harm in health care.

The theme for this year’s World Patient Safety Day is “Improving diagnosis for patient safety” with the slogan “Get it right, make it safe!”. This focuses on the importance of correct and timely diagnosis for patients which ensures patient safety and improves the health outcomes of patients. Medical misdiagnosis may result in wrong or delayed treatment, worsening of a condition, or even death. Additionally, unnecessary pain, suffering, and emotional distress may be experienced by patients.

Financial hardships may also arise from a misdiagnosis because of further medical costs. It is therefore paramount to examine and address the reasons for diagnostic errors in order to improve patient safety.

The Kenya Association of Pharmaceutical Industry (KAPI) represents the industry’s voice and promotes efficiency in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure that medical products and healthcare technologies of the highest quality can be readily available for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases.

KAPI has marked WPSD by hosting various activities to commemorate the various WPSD themes over the past 3 years. In marking this year’s WPSD Campaign, KAPI shall celebrate this day by hosting a fun, fitness and health connect activity. Additionally we shall be hosting a CPD accredited webinar on the 17th September 2024 from 9am.We shall engage various stakeholders including Healthcare Providers, Medical & Pharmacy students, Regulators and Patient Safety advocates as we drive efforts towards Getting it right, making it safe!

If you would like to join us, or further information, kindly contact the KAPI Secretariat via direct

message or via email at [email protected]. To sign up for the webinar, kindly use this link https://bit.ly/KAPIWPSDWebinar1

Great initiative! Let’s continue to prioritise these efforts to improve outcomes and safeguard patients well-being ??
