World Mosquito Day

Today is World Mosquito Day, a day to raise awareness about the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals in the world, responsible for millions of deaths each year. Malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever are just a few of the diseases that mosquitoes can transmit.

While there is no surefire way to prevent all mosquito-borne diseases, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk. Use insect repellent when outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants when possible, and stay in areas with good mosquito control. If you travel to an area with a high risk of mosquito-borne disease, take extra precautions such as using mosquito nets and staying in air-conditioned rooms.

By taking these simple steps, you can help protect yourself and others from the dangers of mosquitoes.

Different types of mosquitoes

On World Mosquito Day, we take a look at the different types of mosquitoes and what makes them so dangerous. There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes, but only around 200 of them are known to transmit diseases to humans.

The most common type of mosquito is the Anopheles mosquito, which is responsible for transmitting malaria. These mosquitoes are found in tropical and subtropical regions, and their bite can cause fever, chills and flu-like symptoms.

Another type of mosquito that can transmit disease is the Aedes mosquito. This type of mosquito is responsible for transmitting Dengue Fever, Zika virus and Yellow Fever. Aedes mosquitoes are found in tropical and sub-tropical regions, and their bite can cause severe fever and headaches.

The Culex mosquito is another type of mosquito that can transmit disease. This type of mosquito is responsible for transmitting West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis. Culex mosquitoes are found in temperate regions, and their bite can cause milder symptoms such as fever and headaches.

Mosquitoes are attracted to warm weather, stagnant water and human sweat. To prevent them from biting, it’s important to wear long sleeves and pants

There are a few things you can do to make yourself less attractive to mosquitoes:

-Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito-biting hours, which are usually dawn and dusk.

-If you're spending time outdoors, make sure to use a mosquito net over your bed or sleeping area.
