Amidst the sobering realities of climate change, World Meteorological Day serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of meteorology in confronting this global challenge.
This year's celebration theme, "At The Frontline of Climate Action," is particularly critical amid the 'red alert' raised by the UN's weather agency on climate change.
World Meteorological Day was established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950 to raise awareness about the importance of meteorology and climatological sciences to the safety and well-being of society. This year's theme particularly underscores the importance of celebrating today in the wake of the climate crisis.
The urgency of the climate crisis: UN issues a ‘Red Alert’ on climate change On Tuesday, March 19th, the UN's weather agency sounded a 'red alert' after a report by the WMO revealed 2023 to be the warmest year on record.
The report found that world temperatures near the earth's surface in 2023 were the warmest in the 174-year observational record since 1850. The temperatures in 2023 averaged 1.45°C higher than in the late 1800s when people began to destroy nature at an industrial scale and burn large amounts of coal, oil, and gas.
The report reveals an alarming record-breaking increase in climate change indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions, land and water temperatures, and glacier and sea ice melting.
These extremities have resulted in frequent heat waves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and intensifying tropical cyclones, causing mayhem and misery for millions of people and inflicting billions of dollars in economic losses.
The role of meteorology ‘At The Frontline of Climate Action’
The alarming 'red alert' by the UN reflects the report by the WMO on Global Climate 2023.
This alert underscores the critical role of meteorological expertise and data in confronting the climate crisis. Meteorology provides actual data that quantify the alarming rise in global temperatures and document the intensification of extreme weather events, serving as a wake-up call to the world and urging a swift decision.

Moreover, meteorology plays a critical role in climate modeling and scenario development through its predictive capabilities. It simulates various climate scenarios based on actual data, which enables climate forecasting and helps policymakers anticipate and prepare for potential climate impacts.
In this predictive role, the WMO released a warning during its report, highlighting the high probability that 2024 will again break the high-temperature record of 2023.
While its warning was dire, the WMO highlighted "a glimmer of hope" in the increased use of renewable energy.
Renewable energy: The glimmer of hope amid the climate crisis
Renewable energy generation has the potential to achieve decarbonization targets and has dramatically increased its use over the past years. This is a positive surge towards climate action, and the WMO highlights a year-on-year increase in the amount of renewable energy being produced.
According to the report, renewable energy capacity saw its most significant rate of increase over the past two decades in 2023, growing by 510 gigawatts (GW), 50% more than was added the previous year.
In response to this report, it is imperative that we take decisive action. We need to prioritize renewable energy investments and adopt sustainable practices that help mitigate the impacts of climate change.
As we celebrate World Meteorological Day today, let us commit to being agents of change in the fight against climate change. Whether it's reducing our carbon footprint, supporting renewable energy initiatives, or advocating for climate-conscious policies, each of us has a role in safeguarding our planet for future generations.
Together, let's stand 'At The Frontline of Climate Action' and make a meaningful difference in addressing the challenges of climate change.
