Today on World Mental Health Day, What can we do to stop the stigma-?
Stigma literally means disgrace or dishonor, It is ironic that throughout history the greatest barriers to helping people with mental illness were the lack of scientific knowledge and effective treatments, and now, in the 21st Century, the greatest barriers are stigma, lack of awareness and access to mental health care
We can begin by recognizing the signs of mental illness in others just like we do physical illness. If you saw a co-worker or friend fainting, choking or doubled over in pain you would ask them, “what’s wrong” or “do you need help”. So when someone you know is in psychological distress, acting strangely, or too often intoxicated, don’t be afraid to get involved; make it your business to find out if something is wrong. The worst that can happen is that they tell you “nothing is wrong” or “mind your own business”. But the best that can happen is that you enable them to get help and avoid suffering and potential harm.
The World Health Organization estimates that over 20% of the population will suffer from a mental disorder in their lifetime. That means mental disorders will affect at least 1 out of every 5 people, mental disorders are so common that the World Bank predicts, by 2030, they will be the leading cause of disability of any disease group and, if nothing is done to improve their care, cost our society 6 trillion dollars
The science and medicine continue their quest to discover the causes and cures for mental illness; we can find the heart and the will to reach out to those in need, to raise awareness, and to end the stigma of mental illness.
