World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day

This Sunday, 10th October, we will celebrate World Mental Health Day.?

A recent Irish Healthcare study found that 63% of employees have had their mental health affected by Covid-19.?

This is staggering.

As mentioned last week, one of the positives of the past 19 months is that mental health is now on the agenda – in households, in schools, in workplaces and in communities.

?

Let’s look at how we can boost and build our mental health.?

?

Mental Health Ireland created the “5 Ways to Wellbeing” – a fantastic resource full of helpful tips and suggestions to boost overall mental health and wellbeing.

I have shared some examples below.

Thumb print with the word connect

Make time each day to Connect. Connect with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. By staying connected and nurturing these relationships we feel happier and more secure, giving us a better sense of purpose.

?

Thumb print with the words Be Active

Look for ways to be active every day. Go for a walk or a run. Step outside. Cycle, play a game, do some gardening or dance.?Discover a physical activity you enjoy which suits your lifestyle and level of mobility and fitness. Research has shown being physically active can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

?

Thumb print with the word Give

Giving to others is good for you. Do something nice for someone else. Thank someone.?Volunteer your time or join a community group. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and create connectedness with the people around you.

?

Thumb print with the words Keep Learning

Try something new.?Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Cook a new recipe.?Take on a new responsibility. Setting yourself a new challenge and learning a new skill will increase your confidence which can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

?

Thumb print with the words Take Notice

Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling.?Be Curious. Catch sight of the beauty surrounding you. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Pay attention to the present moment – to your thoughts, feelings and to the world around you.

?

I would absolutely encourage you to review the full list at www.mentalhealthireland.ie.?Most than likely there will be something you can use to boost your mental health.

?

As always, please get in touch if you have any questions or need support on anything covered in this article.
