The theme for the World Mental Health Day 2022 is to “Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority”, taking it as an opportunity to reconnect and ‘re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health’. ?
WHO defines mental health as “a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community”. ?It has been more than 2 years since we were struck by the Covid-19 pandemic and along with a series of physical health concerns, it has caused a significant surge in mental illness and related conditions, which continues to rise as we endure the repercussions of this global trauma.
What can be we do as a community to contribute in this mission?
1.????Increase awareness and reduce stigma – Stigma and taboo related to mental illness still remains one of the biggest hindrances in seeking help and treatment. It is vital that efforts be made to build a community that accepts mental health as the natural and treatable phenomena that it is and that supports one another to overcome mental illness in a sensitive manner.
2.????Make healthy choices – It is pivotal that we make mental health a priority and make a conscious decision to maintain habits and lifestyle that upholds and enhances an environment conducive to well-being.

3.????Create psychologically safe spaces and systems –Creating and implementing policies that promote and protect mental health in areas of education, work, rights, welfare can be a huge determinant in accomplishing this goal.
4.????Strengthen the quality of mental health care – It is the need of the hour to extend resources in expanding the scope and network of mental health care, improving the affordability and the quality of mental health care services and implementing support systems to provide the necessary aid required by people within their reach.
Ii requires the efforts of one and all to come together as a community in this initiative and take steps to bounce back stronger than ever!
