What is Laylat-al-Qadr?

Laylat-al-Qadr is otherwise known as the Night of Power and is considered to be the Islamic calendar’s Holiest eve. During this night, Angel Jibril Alaihimus Salaam revealed the Holy Qur'an’s first verses to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This night falls within Ramadan’s final 10 days, and although the exact date is unidentified, it is commonly thought of as the Holy month’s 27th day.

This is a night of great commemoration and devotion to Allah (SWT) and places higher than that of 1,000 months

How Long is The Night of Power?

The Night of Power is no longer or shorter than any other night; however, during Ramadan, many Muslims prefer to sacrifice sleep on this Holy day in order to worship and pray to Allah (SWT). It is believed that giving up sleep for Allah (SWT) to pray and undertake good deeds will result in all prior sins being pardoned.

How is the Night of Power Observed and Celebrated?

Laylat-al-Qadr calls for much reflection and prayer. Whilst fulfilling good deeds and asking for forgiveness, Allah (SWT) is thought to see and answer your prayers during this night.

Ramadan influences us to reflect, and it is this night where the significance is increased. Reciting the Holy Qur'an is the best way to appreciate everything that Allah (SWT) does – devoting the whole day to your faith.

You should also be encouraged to study the Holy Qur'an on the Night of Power. Understanding its meaning brings a whole new level to simply reciting its teachings. This deeper understanding can provide you with the blessings of 1,000 months.?

·???????? Fasting every day of the year is considered non-rewarding; Muhammad ? said: "There is no reward for fasting for the one who perpetually fasts." This Hadith is considered authentic by Sunni scholars.[SahihMuslim.Com". www.sahihmuslim.com.]

Iftar: Around the world

Iftar (Arabic: ?????, romanized:?if?ār) is the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims in Ramadan at the time of adhan (call to prayer) of the Maghrib prayer.
This is their second meal of the day; the daily fast during Ramadan begins immediately after the pre-dawn meal of suhur and continues during the daylight hours, ending with sunset with the evening meal of iftar.

Description

Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan, and is often done as a community, with Muslim people gathering to break their fast together. The meal is taken just after the call to the Maghrib prayer, which is around sunset. Traditionally three dates are eaten to break the fast, in emulation of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, who broke his fast in this manner, but this is not mandatory. Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that such was practised by Muhammad.( ?).

Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, iftar usually includes the traditional dates, shorwa (soup), kebabs, du piyaza (meat stewed in an onion-based sauce), manto (seasoned, minced meat wrapped in pasta), kabuli palaw (rice with lentils, raisins, carrots, and lamb), shorm beray, bolani (fried or baked flat bread with a vegetable filling), and rice, as well as other dishes. Afghans also have an extensive range of sweet dishes and desserts.
Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, a wide variety of foods is prepared to break the fast at Maghrib time. Some of the common iftar items from Bangladeshi cuisine include piyaju (made of lentil paste, chopped onions and green chillies, like falafel), beguni (made of thin slices of eggplant dipped in a thin batter of gram flour), jilapi, muri, haleem, dates, samosas, dal puri (a type of lentil-based savoury pastry), chola (cooked Bengal gram ), kebab, mughlai porota (stuffed porota with minced meat, eggs and spices), variety of pitha, aloo chop, singara, ghugni, amerti, bundia, nimki, Pakora, khaja, batasa, khabar tula, Bengali sweets, Roasted chickpeas and different types of fruits such as watermelon, apple, banana, papaya, pear, mango and pineapple. Bengalis break their fast with all their friends and family and eat together in a banquet with their array of food however savoury items are eaten before sweet.[ "Chawkbazar: The original iftar market in Dhaka". 19 May 2018.]
Drinks such as lemon shorbot and yoghurt shorbot (made of yoghurt, water, sugar and rooh afza) as well as borhani and gurer shorbot (jaggery shorbot) are common on iftar tables across the country. People like to have iftar at home with all family members, and iftar parties are also arranged by mosques.[ "Iftar at Baitul Mukarram Mosque"] People often distribute iftar in mosques for the people praying to eat, believing it is a good deed. After Iftar people pray maghrib and later Isha then many head straight for Taraweeh prayers where are performed to finish one Juz' of the Holy Quran.

Maldives

In the Maldives, iftar is known as roadha villun, which means "break fast". As usual, most Muslims break the fast with either dried or fresh dates. There are many exclusive restaurants and hotels providing special iftar and dinner packages for those who want to break the fast outside with the families and friends. All the mosques in the Maldives provide free dates and juice to break fast. At local homes, one will find various cold fruit juices (water melon, mango, passion fruit, pineapple) sweet (boakiba, pudding) and salty shorteats called hedhika (boakiba, bajiya, gulha, masroshi, cutlets), the latter made with mainly fish, curries, roshi and salads made with local greens, chilli, onion and lemon.

Nigeria

Nigeria hosts what is by some way the largest Muslim community in West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Iftar (known in the Hausa Language as buda-baki and in the Yoruba language as isinu) holds the same importance in Nigeria's Sunni population as the rest of the Islamic world. Foods include Jollof rice, suya, ?b?? ?gúsí, ewur?, àkàrà, dabinu/dabino, ??p??t??, etc.

Pakistan

In Pakistan, almost everybody stops to rejoice for a few minutes following the iftar sirens and adhan (call to prayer). Preparations for iftar commence about three hours beforehand, in homes and at roadside stalls. The fast can be ended by eating dates, or simply by drinking water, if dates are not available. Many restaurants offer iftar deals, especially in the big cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.[ "Iftar buffet culture on rise in twin-cities". Daily Times. 2022-04-19. Retrieved 2022-12-14.] Iftar as a meal in Pakistan[ Pakistani Ramadan Recipes for Iftar (Urdu, English)". The Ramadan Kareem. 29 March 2022.] is usually heavy, consisting mainly of sweet and savoury treats such as jalebi (pretzel-shaped, deep-fried batter, soaked in sugar syrup), samosas["Samosas and pakoras remain fan favorites at iftar meals in Pakistan". Arab News PK. 2019-05-17. Retrieved 2022-12-14.](minced meat and/or vegetables, wrapped in dough and deep-fried or baked), pakora[ "Pakora considered most popular Iftar item". The Express Tribune. 2018-05-19. Retrieved 2022-12-14.] (sliced vegetables, dipped in batter and deep-fried) with ketchup or chatni, and namak para (seasoned cracker), besides the staple dates and water.
Other items such as chicken rolls, spring rolls, Shami Kebabs, fruit salads, papad (sheets of batter that are then sun-dried, deep-fried or roasted until they have the texture of potato chips or crisps), chana chaat (chickpea salad), and dahi balay (or "dahi baray"—fried lentil dumplings served with yoghurt) are also very common. Amongst the Punjabi, Sindhi and Mohajir households, iftar is often followed up by a regular dinner later during the night. Those in the north and west, including Pashtuns, Balochis, and Tajiks, on the other hand combine dinner and iftar. Laghman soup (noodle soup), locally called Kalli, is an iftar staple in Chitral and parts of Gilgit.
After iftar, Muslims rush to the mosques to offer Tarawih (an 8 or 20 rakat Muslim prayer during the month of Ramadan). Various television channels also stop their normal telecast and broadcast special Ramadan transmissions, especially at the time of Sehar and Iftar. The whole month of Ramadan is marked in Pakistan as a festive season when people make donations to the poor and give charity. Some organizations and companies also offer free iftar meals to the common people.
Turkey

In Turkey and Northern Cyprus, the month of Ramadan is celebrated with great joy, and iftar dinners play a big part in this. In larger cities like Istanbul all of the restaurants offer special deals and set menus for iftar. Most of the set menus start with a soup or an appetiser platter called iftariye. It consists of dates, olives, cheese, past?rma, sujuk, Ramazan pidesi (a special bread only baked during Ramadan), and various pastries called b?rek. The main course consists of various Turkish foods, especially the Ottoman Palace Traditional Foods.
Most of the Ramadan celebration practices in Turkey have their roots in the traditions of the former Ottoman Empire. At the minarets of mosques, lights called kandil are switched on from sunset to dawn. As soon as the sun sets, a traditional "Ramadan Cannon" is fired from the highest hill in every city as a signal to start eating the iftar.
In Istanbul, one of the more notable places to celebrate the iftar dinner is the Sultanahmet Square. Located near the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) the Sultanahmet Square hosts many activities, including mini restaurants opened during the month of Ramadan, special shows, and traditional Ottoman theatrical shows. At Topkapi Palace the Ottoman sultan-caliphs would break their fast under the gilded bower.
The Tarawih prayer is mostly practised in Turkish mosques as 20 rekahs, broken into 5 groups of 4 rekahs. Between each set of 4 rekahs, a hymn composed by the Turkish musician Buhurizade Itri is sung by all people attending the prayer. The hymn is a prayer to praise the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
As Ramadan is also the month of almsgiving, many people organise iftar dinners for the poor, students, guests, and foreigners. People can find Turkish food available in most mosques.
During Ramadan, Turkish NGOs like the Journalists and Writers Foundation have recently started to organise Interfaith Dialogue Dinners to promote dialogue between those of different religious and cultural backgrounds. These high-profile events have started a whole new era of organising large dinner parties by the NGOs in Turkey for people from different cultures and understandings even if they are not Muslims. In recent years Turkish NGOs, such as the Peace Islands Institute (former Interfaith Dialog Center), all over the world have organised iftar dinners for inter-cultural and interfaith dialogue, which helps promote the true understanding of the month of Ramadan.?
Russia

In Russia, Ramadan is observed mostly in Muslim-majority states such as Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. In cities outside of Muslim majority republics with a significant Muslim presence, it has become a tradition to open Ramadan Tent, a public iftar event organised by Russia's Mufti Council. In Dagestan, Muslims gather in Makhachkala Central Juma Mosque to break their fast and pray taraweeh prayers. Dates and fruits are preferred to break the fast, followed by soup, bread, and different local delicacies such as be?barmaq, kurze and others.
Singapore

In Singapore, iftar is called "buka puasa", meaning "to open the fast" It is usually accompanied with dates and sweet drinks such as Bandung, Chendol and Air Sirap. Singaporean Muslims usually eat an array of dishes ranging from rice and noodles. Many buy food from bazaars that can be found in different parts of the city state such as in Bugis, Kampong Glam, Geylang Serai and even in populated towns such as Tampines, Jurong East, Jurong West, Clementi and West Coast.

United States and Canada

Iftar meals in the United States and Canada are often held at mosques, households, and Islamic community centres.
On 9 December 1805, President Thomas Jefferson postponed dinner at the White House until sunset to accommodate an envoy from Tunis, an event considered by many to be the first White House iftar.[17]
The first official iftar was held at the White House in 1996, hosted by First Lady Hillary Clinton, and iftar meals were subsequently held annually at the White House and hosted by the U.S. President and the First Lady until 2016. President Donald Trump did not host an iftar dinner at the White House in 2017, his first year in office, but resumed the tradition on June 6, 2018, hosting friends and diplomatic staff from many Muslim-majority nations.
From 1996, the United States Department of State held an annual iftar dinner for local and national community leaders and faith groups as well as foreign policy officials. This practice ceased in 2017, when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declined to host an iftar. The Pentagon continues its tradition of holding an iftar for Muslim members of the U.S. armed forces and special guests from other nations; the first such iftar under the Trump administration was held on 15 June 2017.

Canadian Prime Minister (Former) Stephen Harper extended an invitation to Muslim leaders to break the Ramadan fast with him at the Prime Minister's residence in 2015. This was the first time the Prime Minister's office had hosted an iftar.?
Tarawih (Arabic: ??????, romanized:?tarāwī? or Tarawee),?
Tarawih/Tarawee (Arabic: ??????, romanized:?tarāwī?), also rendered in English as Taraweeh, is derived from the Arabic root ? ? ? related to rest and relaxation. Tarawih prayers are special Sunnah prayers involving reading long portions of the Quran, as well as performing many rakahs (cycles of movement involved in Islamic prayer.
Overview

Tarawih/Tarawee prayers begin from the first Moon-sighted evening (start 1st. of Ramadan, not 1st. of Siam) to second Moon-sighted evening (last day of Ramadan). This prayer is performed in congregation during Ramadan of the Islamic calendar, after Isha (and before Witr (Bitr), which is also prayed following the imam who leads the prayer aloud in one or three rakats unlike how it is done in other eleven months).

It may be noted that Tarawee is not related of Siam but related of the month of Ramadan. For example Abdur Rahim is an illman. He is not able to performed Siam but able to perform Salat (Namaz), he should be performed with 5 times Salat along with Tarawee.

As a result in Nafal siam, there is no system of Tarawih/Tarawee in Islamic Shariah.
Khatme (Complete) Tarabi or Khatme (Complete) Quran?
?
In the holy month of Ramadan, after the Isha prayer, before the Witr (Bitr), in the Taraweeh prayer, one of the obligatory commandments of the prayer is "Qiraat", where 1 para of the Holy Quran is recited every day for 30 days, 30 paras in some places, in 27 days, in some places in 15/18 days. Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting but if anyone is ill or on a journey the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. God intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

Etymology and meaning

The word?qur?ān?appears about 70 times in the Quran itself, assuming various meanings. It is a?verbal noun?(ma?dar) of the?Arabic?verb?qara?a?(???) meaning 'he read' or 'he recited'.
An important meaning of the word is the 'act of reciting', as reflected in an early Quranic passage: "It is for Us to collect it and to recite it (qur?ānahu)."[ Quran 75:17]
In other verses, the word refers to 'an individual passage recited [by Muhammad ?]'. Its?liturgical?context is seen in a number of passages, for example:?"So when?al-qur?ān?is recited, listen to it and keep silent."[ Quran 7:204]?The word may also assume the meaning of a codified scripture when mentioned with other scriptures such as the?Torah?and?Gospel.[Encyclopedia of Islam Online].
The term also has closely related?synonyms?that are employed throughout the Quran. Each synonym possesses its own distinct meaning, but its use may converge with that of?qur?ān?in certain contexts. Such terms include?kitāb?('book'),?āyah?('sign'), and?sūrah?('scripture'); the latter two terms also denote units of revelation. In the large majority of contexts, usually with a?definite article?(al-), the word is referred to as the?wa?y?('revelation'), that which has been "sent down" (tanzīl) at intervals.[35][36]?Other related words include:?dhikr?('remembrance'), used to refer to the Quran in the sense of a reminder and warning; and??ikmah?('wisdom'), sometimes referring to the revelation or part of it.[11][vi]
The Quran describes itself as 'the discernment' (al-furqān), 'the mother book' (umm al-kitāb), 'the guide' (huda), 'the wisdom' (hikmah), 'the remembrance' (dhikr), and 'the revelation' (tanzīl; 'something sent down', signifying the descent of an object from a higher place to lower place).[37]?Another term is?al-kitāb?('The Book'), though it is also used in the Arabic language for other scriptures, such as the Torah and the Gospels. The term?mus'haf?('written work') is often used to refer to particular Quranic manuscripts but is also used in the Quran to identify earlier revealed books.

The Quran is believed by Muslims to be not simply divinely inspired, but the literal?word of Allah.?Muhammad ? did not write it as he did not know how to write. According to tradition, several of Muhammad's ??companions?served as scribes, recording the revelations.[ Donner, Fred (2006). "The historical context". In McAuliffe, Jane Dammen (ed.). The Cambridge Companion to the Qur'ān. Cambridge University Press. pp. 31–33.]?Shortly after the prophet's death, the Quran was compiled by the companions, who had written down or memorized parts of it.?Caliph?Uthman?established a standard version, now known as the?Uthmanic codex, which is generally considered the archetype of the Quran known today. There are, however,?variant readings, with mostly minor differences in meaning.[ Donner, Fred (2006). "The historical context". In McAuliffe, Jane Dammen (ed.). The Cambridge Companion to the Qur'ān. Cambridge University Press. pp. 31–33.]?
I?tikāf

I?tikāf (Arabic: ??????, also i'tikaaf or e'tikaaf) is an Islamic practice consisting of a period of staying in a mosque for a certain number of days, devoting oneself to ibadah during these days and staying away from worldly affairs. (Sources: i) Habib Rauf (January 0101). Itikaf: An Introduction. Glasgow Central Mosque. GGKEY:KDYYR0A1QE7. ii) "Itikaf". Retrieved 25 April 2016 iii) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%CA%BFtik%C4%81f).

The literal meaning of the word suggests sticking and adhering to, or being regular in something. It is particularly popular among devout Muslims during the last 10 days of Ramadan, during which one secludes oneself in a part of the mosque and spends all one's time to worshiping.(Sources: i) "Itikaf, Its meaning & legitimacy". Health effects of fasting

Fasting may have different results on health in different circumstances. To understand whether loss of appetite (anorexia) during illness was protective or detrimental, researchers in the laboratory of?Ruslan Medzhitov?at?Yale School of Medicine?gave?carbohydrate?to mice with a bacterial or viral illness, or deprived them of carbohydrate. They found that carbohydrate was detrimental to bacterial?sepsis.
But with viral sepsis or?influenza, nutritional supplementation with carbohydrates was beneficial, decreasing mortality, whereas denying glucose to the mice, or blocking its metabolism, was lethal. The researchers put forth hypotheses to explain the findings and called for more research on humans to determine whether our bodies react similarly, depending on whether an illness is bacterial or viral.[2][3]
Alternate-day fasting (alternating between a 24-hour "fast day" when the person eats less than 25% of usual energy needs, followed by a 24-hour non-fasting "feast day" period) has been shown to improve?cardiovascular?and metabolic?biomarkers?similarly to a?calorie restriction diet?in people who are?overweight, obese or have?metabolic syndrome.
A 2021 review found that moderate alternate-day fasting for two to six months was associated with reductions of body weight,?body mass index, and cardiometabolic?risk factors?in overweight or obese adults.

Medical application

Fasting is always practised prior to surgery or other procedures that require?general anesthesia?because of the risk of?pulmonary aspiration?of gastric contents after induction of anesthesia (i.e., vomiting and inhaling the vomit, causing life-threatening?aspiration pneumonia).
Additionally, certain medical tests, such as?cholesterol?testing (lipid panel) or certain?blood glucose?measurements require fasting for several hours so that a?baseline?can be established. In the case of a lipid panel, failure to fast for a full 12 hours (including vitamins) will guarantee an elevated?triglyceride?measurement.

Mental health

In one review, fasting improved?alertness,?mood, and subjective feelings of well-being, possibly improving overall symptoms of?depression, and boosting cognitive performance.

Weight loss

Intermittent fasting for periods shorter than 24 hours has been shown to be effective for?weight loss?in obese and healthy adults and to maintain lean body mass.

Complications

In rare occurrences, dry fasting can lead to the potentially fatal refeeding syndrome upon reinstatement of food intake due to?electrolyte imbalance.
Fasting?is the abstention from eating and sometimes drinking. From a purely?physiological?context, "fasting" may refer to the?metabolic?status of a person who has not eaten overnight (see "Breakfast"), or to the metabolic state achieved after complete?digestion?and?absorption?of a meal.?Metabolic changes in the fasting state begin after absorption of a meal (typically 3–5 hours after eating).
A?diagnostic fast?refers to prolonged fasting from 1 to 100 hours (depending on age) conducted under observation to facilitate the investigation of a health complication, usually?hypoglycemia. Many people may also fast as part of a medical procedure or a check-up, such as preceding a?colonoscopy?or?surgery, or before certain medical tests.?Intermittent fasting?is a technique sometimes used for?weight loss?that incorporates regular fasting into a person's dietary schedule. Fasting may also be part of a?religious ritual, often associated with specifically scheduled fast days, as?determined by the religion.e

The Quran: Holy Book of Guidance for Humankind

The Quran describes itself as a book of guidance for humankind (?2:185). It sometimes offers detailed accounts of specific historical events, and it often emphasizes the moral significance of an event over its narrative sequence.[Sources: i) Nasr 2003, p. 42, ii) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran]?Supplementing the Quran with explanations for some cryptic Quranic narratives, and rulings that also provide the basis for Islamic law in most denominations of Islam,?are?hadiths—oral and written traditions believed to describe words and actions of Muhammad ?.[v]?During prayers, the Quran is recited only in?Arabic.[ Street, Brian V. (2001). Literacy and Development: Ethnographic Perspectives. p. 193.]

Someone who has memorized the entire Quran is called a?hafiz. Ideally, verses are recited with a special kind of?elocution?reserved for this purpose, called?tajwid. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims typically complete the recitation of the whole Quran during?tarawih?prayers. In order to extrapolate the meaning of a particular Quranic verse, Muslims rely on?exegesis, or commentary rather than a direct translation of the text.[ Brown, Norman O. (1991). Apocalypse And/or Metamorphosis. University of California Press. p. 81. ISBN 0520072987.]

History of Holy Quran
Prophetic era

Islamic tradition relates that?Muhammad ??received?his first revelation?in the?Cave of Hira?during one of his isolated retreats to the mountains. Thereafter, he received revelations over a period of 23 years. According to?Hadith?and?Muslim history, after Muhammad ??immigrated to Madina?and formed an independent Muslim community, he ordered many of his?companions?to recite the Quran and to learn and teach the laws, which were revealed daily. It is related that some of the?Quraysh?who were taken prisoners at the?Battle of Badr?regained their freedom after they had taught some of the Muslims the simple writing of the time. Thus a group of Muslims gradually became literate. As it was initially spoken, the Quran was recorded on tablets, bones, and the wide, flat ends of date palm fronds.
Most Sahih al-Bukhari?narrates Muhammad ? describing the revelations as, "Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell" and?Aisha Rodiallahu Anha?reported, "I saw the Prophet being inspired Divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over).
Benefits of reciting the Holy Quran:

Narrated Muhammad bin Ka'b Al-Qurazi Rodiallahu A’nhu:
"I heard 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud saying: 'The Messenger of Allah (?) said: "[Whoever recites a letter] from Allah's Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter."

Muhammad's ? first revelation, according to the Quran, was accompanied with a vision. The agent of revelation is mentioned as the "one mighty in power,"]?the one who "grew clear to view when he was on the uppermost horizon. Then he drew nigh and came down till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer."
The Islamic studies scholar Welch states in the?Encyclopaedia of Islam?that he believes the graphic descriptions of Muhammad's ? condition at these moments may be regarded as genuine, because he was severely disturbed after these revelations. According to Welch, these seizures would have been seen by those around him as convincing evidence for the superhuman origin of Muhammad's ? inspirations.?

A Question and ?an Answer on the holy Romado-n.

It was asked that, if the devil is chained in the holy month of Ramadan, then why does not the evil work stop in the month of Ramadan?
Proper answer is that evil is not only done by the Devil (Shaitan). Nafs Devil (Shaitan) is also involved in it. In this context, the Holy Quran says:

Under the above circumstances, we do not know of such a hadith that Nafs Satan is also imprisoned in the holy month of Ramadan.

HOLY ROMADO=N WORLD NEWS 1444 HIJRAH
The holy month of Ramadan is finally here, and as much as we are looking forward to these nights of worship, charity, family, community, and great food (yes we all become great culinary chefs for some reason during this time!), is also an important time to take care of our mental health even more.?
As a psychotherapist, the general guideline I provide to those wanting to balance their mental health is to keep a healthy balance of their diet, sleep, activity levels, and maintain good relationships, and spirituality. ?

If one of those factors is off balance and the person is faced with a difficult situation then they may experience challenges dealing with the difficult situation. If these factors are in balance, then when faced with such challenges they are most likely able to deal with the situation better.?
These guidelines fall in line with keeping the balance of the eight dimensions of wellness: occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, physical, social, and intellectual [1]. These dimensions beautifully fall into place with the tradition of Imam Musa Al Kathem where he encourages us to “Divide your time into four parts – an hour for Allah (swt), an hour for work/providing for your family, an hour for socializing with friends who are trustworthy and can keep your secrets, and lastly, an hour for yourselves in which you can perform what you desire without falling into haram” [2].?
As these are the basics to creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, these basics become even more important to balance and implement during the holy month of Ramadan, with some tweaks to fully benefit from its many blessings.??
Here are a few ideas to consider for this month keeping the above guidelines in mind as the base to potentially build upon from personal and professional experiences as well as from the experts I work with and take guidance from!?

Nutrition

In general, when it comes to nutrition and mental health, it’s all about eating clean, green, and in balance of your complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; eating three main balanced meals a day containing the above along with healthy snacks and lots of hydration and low intake of stimulants like caffeine (which can impact sleep and even trigger anxiety-like responses – uncomfortable pounding fast heartbeat, shaking and sweating etc).
During this month we want to maintain that balance even more but adjust the timings of our food intake according to the times of abstaining from food to the breaking of the fast. Some days we fast for as long as 15 hours depending on which part of the world we live in, which can be quite challenging, especially in warmer climates.
It is vital that we hydrate properly with water-dense foods like fruits and vegetables (watermelons, berries, cucumbers, tomatoes etc), soups with lentils, and avoid greasy deep-fried foods which can cause us to be more thirsty.?
Meal planning in general is one of the basics of a healthy lifestyle. During this month this is key to creating creative and healthy iftars and suhoors that can prevent us from indulging in last-minute unhealthy binging choices based on cravings throughout the day.
Planning iftars and aiming for low-fat, fluid-rich foods with natural sugars (like dates) can be quite helpful in maintaining a nutritious diet. Sohours with complex, high fibre and whole grains such as oasts, yogurts, and smoothies can help you feel full during the day and aid digestion [3].?
Of course, this doesn’t mean you turn down those yummy Month of Ramathan desserts at gatherings, but rather indulge in them with moderation as my trainer Ilyas Govani from @gainswithgovinchy has advised me! Moderation is key! [4]
The fluctuation of sugar levels and the types of foods we ingest will also have a positive and or negative impact on our mood and mental health, therefore, being mindful of what we provide our bodies with is crucial for our mental wellbeing.

Exercise

This brings us to our activity levels. We recommend 3 to 4 times a week of some form of physical exercise to reduce stress, get that natural release of endorphins that get rid of your stress hormones, get in shape, stay fit, maintain and improve your mental health, and many more reasons of course.
It is a healthy habit for maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle that can be carried over into this month. It just depends on when is the best time for you. Personally, after solidifying iftar plans with friends, family, or the mosque, I head off to the gym for a quick timed workout to be completed before iftar time, while listening to my favorite duas, Islamic songs, eulogies, or daily Quran Juz.?
Knowing I will be eating right after helps me get through the last bit of the long fasting day where the digestive system is practically turned off as our fight/flight system is fully active to move as needed. Experts also recommend this time to exercise as well as recommending that we focus on strength training rather than cardio exercises.?
Another good time is between after iftar and suhoor, depending on your energy levels and school/work schedule. The key thing to remember is proper hydration and replenishing yourself properly with high fiber and protein-rich foods which release energy slowly [2, 3].? ?
Please connect with your own personal trainer or medical professional to discuss these in detail depending on what your training and health goals are.

Mental Health

As mental health disorders and conditions are considered actual illnesses, they can potentially fall under the category of fasting exemptions just like other illnesses. Because of the stigma and misconceptions around mental health, a large majority of people with mental health disorders will suffer in silence including during this holy month.
That is why I highly recommend seeking guidance and advice from a trusted Islamic scholar educated in psychology and mental health and your medical and mental health professional to see if fasting is doable with the mental health condition you are living with.
When it comes to a variety of mental health disorders, issues, and conditions such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD where medications are needed, it is crucial that there be a discussion with your doctor/therapist as to when and how these medications are taken given iftar and suhoor times.
Perhaps you can even consider practicing a few days before the month begins to get used to the time changes so there will be minimal disruption to your medication treatment plan.
Eating disorders can be quite triggering during this time of the year and need to be approached with delicacy. Those struggling with such disorders can have a talk with their doctors or mental health practitioners in order to make sure that they can, first of all, fast, and second, have the support needed when facing challenges.
As Ammaarah Zayna says, “it becomes difficult to differentiate whether you are fasting for God or fasting for your eating disorder, and the whole process of this can be incredibly overwhelming to manage.” [5]?
It is indeed interesting to reflect upon such struggles as one navigates through this holy month of intended planned worship that is centered around abstaining from food and some other worldly pleasures that are halal to us to abstain from.
Yet for the person living with an eating disorder or other mental health challenges, the lack of control or overcompensation of control along with low moods, or intense anxious overwhelming thoughts can potentially be harmful to the self if one is not proactive in setting up plans and supports ahead of time. Not to mention that their whole biochemistry dynamics can be impacted especially when medications are involved.?
A person living with such conditions can communicate ahead of time with their friends and families about how they wish to be supported for the upcoming month. This can prevent awkward difficult situations as the month goes by [5].

Social Interactions, Community and Spirituality

During this month, with our individual and group worshiping at home?or as the pandemic restrictions ease up at homes and mosques, we can forget that it can also be a potentially lonely time for those away from their families for work and or school, for reverts or for practicing Muslims living with non-practicing friends and or families.
It is helpful to try and find a local mosque, center, or organization at school or in the community to connect with and break the fast together. Although we have had plenty and possibly enough of online programs at times, these can be quite useful for staying in connection with lecture series, historical and religious TV series (and no I don’t mean the latest release on Netflix!) to gain knowledge as well as to grow spiritually. They can be part of the ongoing development of healthy habits and routines that we aim to continue and foster during this month to carry over into the rest of the year. ?

I have seen how challenging and lonely this month can be for Muslim international students and I have always tried to connect these students to the on-campus Muslim student groups as well as to similar community groups off campus to help with that.
For those in such or similar situations, please try to connect as soon as you can to such community resources and reach out to potential practicing Muslim roommates, housemates, neighbours, etc. to create your own month of Ramadan community, culture and routines.
Volunteering at local centers, mosques, or charity groups is another great way to meet like-minded people while at the same time doing what is recommended to us during this time.
It could be at local food banks, homeless/womens’ shelters, mosques, etc. through which you connect meaningfully with people as well as help others. Research, as well as lived clinical experience, show that volunteering your time and efforts and helping those in need, giving to those less fortunate, feeding the hungry etc can greatly improve your mental health.
Helping others releases oxytocin – the “love” hormone – into our system making us feel good and fulfilled, not to mention the good deeds we are collecting for our souls and cleansing our spirits with!

Spiritual Mental Health

Finally, a last word when it comes to your own spiritual growth and development. We have heard time and time again that this month is not about speed reading through the holy Quran to complete it or how many good acts of charity you put on display, it truly is a personal journey of reflection and contemplation towards your connection to God.
One can easily get caught up in comparing oneself to others and feel low about their lack of personal effort or potentially get into the “imposter syndrome” mindset where they feel they are not good rough to be fasting if they have prayed regularly throughout the year, or do not wear the hijab, or not as “religious” as Mohammad or Fatima there. The key point here is that we are ALL on a personal non-judgemental journey where our spirituality will naturally waver anytime of the year as well as during this holy month.?
Knowing that the heaven doors are wide open to receive our good acts and supplications is a potential great motivator for us to do our own personal best to grow and benefit from the abundance of spirituality that this month is blessing us with. It is up to you as to how you would like to plan and implement your goals for this month just as you would for a project that needed proper planning and execution. And yes decorating the house and making chocolate-covered dates can be a fun way to get into the spirit! However, these are just surface-level preparations.
Using a Ramadan month planner such as “Holy Month of Ramadan in Forty Days” by @craftycadeau?can be a wonderful tool to track your spiritual development with reminders, tips, Quran verses, and tradition quotes to empower you in your solidifying your routines and to help to reach your goals for the month and beyond.? The Kun Fa Yakun Planner is also a great tool to keep track as well and develop your spiritual as well as life goals with the goal of increasing spirituality with the balance of “deen and dunya” that you can do during this holy month into the rest of the year [7].? These are a few of the resources I have been given to review and have enjoyed by creatives in our community.
Students during this month busy with assignments and exams may feel they are missing out and potentially lethargic. It is common and normal. Students can try to find an optimal focus time that works for them and also remember that their struggle (jihad) in their studies is also a form of worship as we are reminded by our scholars!
There is so much more that can be discussed when it comes to the Holy Month of Ramadan and our mental health. Here we have touched briefly upon the various aspects that fit into the dimensions of wellness described by modern psychology as well as from the Ahlul-Bayt (peace be upon them) as a means to find balance in our spiritual and personal development pursuits.? They are not groundbreaking suggestions but rather reminders of many things that we already know.??
What I find beautiful is the challenge to push ourselves to reach such goals on these holy nights through mindfulness, awareness, and compassion with balance and doing our absolute best given our circumstances in order to carry over new and or strongly developed habits that we have worked on over the course of thirty days into the rest of the year to maintain and keep ourselves accountable to such a spiritually, physically and mentally healthy lifestyle.?
The Eid we celebrate after the ending of these thirty days is a celebration of what we trained our spiritual and physical selves to accomplish with discipline and abstaining from what is halal for us, feeling the hunger of others, gratitude for what we have and so much more, all in order to develop new and improved habits to improve the quality of our spiritual and physical lives…Inshallah (God Willing).
May you and your loved ones be blessed with the beauty of this holy spiritual month and may you find serenity as we enter the Month of Mercy and of Spiritual Training.
If you would like to follow along with more mental health tips, exercise, nutrition, resources as well as spiritual development during this month, please follow my daily stories on @berak_h exploring these and more Inshallah.?

Please remember us all in your prayers.

President Tokayev Calls for Unity, Harmony to Promote National Development During Iftar Reception

BY STAFF REPORT in SOCIETY on 10 APRIL 2023

ASTANA – Kazakhstan will be able to reach goals and become a truly progressive, creative, and advanced country with unity and harmony in society,? President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during an April 7 iftar (fast-breaking evening meal) reception at the presidential palace to mark the Holy Month of Ramadan, reported the Akorda press service. According to Tokayev, Kazakhstan is the only state in the geopolitical environment carrying out large-scale reforms, resulting in the updated Constitution and nationwide transformations.

“We are determined to continue the reform policy. Our main task is to strengthen sovereignty and protect our national interests. Kazakhstan will continue its active international cooperation, and its foreign policy will always be independent. (…) Despite difficulties, the country will not deviate from the intended path,” said Tokayev.
The reception was attended by state and public figures, scientists, doctors, teachers, representatives of ethnocultural associations, diplomats, cultural figures, and rescue workers.
Addressing the evening guests, Tokayev emphasized the special significance of the holy month of Ramadan for all Muslims who devote this time to spiritual self-improvement and righteous deeds.
The President said it is vital to promote traditional Islam in line with the spiritual and cultural values of the society that have consistently called for good and have deep moral meaning.

“A wonderful example is the bata – the blessing of elders to youth. The younger generation has always treated the elders with due respect. Daughters have always received special attention and a reverent attitude in Kazakh society. All this resonates with the main values of traditional Islam,” the President said.
