World Humanitarian Day 2024: A Comprehensive Overview

Date: August 19, 2024

Purpose and Significance: World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is observed annually on August 19 to honor humanitarian workers who risk their lives to assist people in crises worldwide. The day also serves to promote global awareness of humanitarian needs and encourage support for those who suffer due to conflict, disaster, and other emergencies.

2024 Theme: #ActForHumanity This year, the theme is #ActForHumanity, emphasizing the urgent need to protect civilians and humanitarian workers in conflict zones. With 2023 being the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers, with over 280 aid workers killed and 591 attacked, the theme underscores the increasing dangers faced by those on the front lines. The United Nations and other organizations are calling for greater respect for international humanitarian laws and accountability for those who violate these protections.

Current Humanitarian Crises: Several ongoing crises demand urgent attention:

  1. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): The conflict between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese army has escalated, leading to over 7.3 million internally displaced people and 23.4 million facing food insecurity.
  2. Syria: With 16.7 million people in need of aid and 7 million internally displaced, the country remains in dire straits as the conflict continues, compounded by economic collapse and underfunded humanitarian efforts.
  3. Yemen: Entering its tenth year of war, Yemen faces a humanitarian catastrophe with 18.2 million people needing aid and 17.6 million at risk of severe hunger.

?42,500 people were displaced everyday during 2014. This equates with every single person in a large city such as San Diego, USA?or Brussels, Belgium being displaced every single month.
Colombia continues to have more than 6 million people who have fled their homes due to violence — the highest rate in the world after Syria.

New Developments and Challenges: In response to the rising dangers, organizations like Concern Worldwide have strengthened their security protocols, including regular training and psychological support for humanitarian workers. Additionally, global humanitarian funding needs have surged, with the UN appealing for $48.7 billion in 2024 to address growing crises across 71 countries. However, funding gaps persist, exacerbating the challenges faced by aid workers and the communities they serve.
