Today, we celebrate the magical power of a hug – that small yet mighty gift that brings us joy, warmth, and connection!

As Virginia Satir, the renowned systemic therapist, beautifully said:

  • 4 hugs a day for survival.
  • 8 hugs a day for maintenance.
  • 12 hugs a day for growth.

But why are hugs so important? It’s no coincidence that touch is the first sense a baby develops in the womb and the most enduring one throughout life. Hugs are nature’s antidepressants: they flood us with oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, while reducing stress hormones like cortisol. In short, hugs are a natural way to boost happiness and reduce stress.

Absolutely! Now more than ever, we need them. Even if circumstances have changed the way we connect, hugs (both physical and emotional) remain a powerful way to support our well-being.

  1. Start by hugging yourself! Begin the day with a hug for your most loyal companion: YOU! Wrap your arms around yourself and say it out loud: “I love you, thank you, you’re amazing!”
  2. Send virtual hugs. A hug doesn’t have to be physical to be meaningful. Stretch your arms, lock eyes with someone, and let the emotion wrap you both, even from afar. The intention is what counts!
