Not a day goes by without more news about artificial intelligence --- from generative tools to the latest features embedded in corporate applications. So what do we do with this information? Here are some of my thoughts on this question.
- This situation is not new, we've been through these transformative times before. The launch of the personal computer. The launch of operating systems and enterprise software. The launch of handheld devices. The simplification of web and app development. So this isn't something to overwhelm us; it is a new opportunity to leverage for the benefit of work, content creation, and profit.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is only one piece of a larger transformative movement. While generative AI tools may be the most accessible right now, there are more intelligence tools in play. For this, there's benefit in seeking out the larger picture, Intelligent Transformation. This will include generative AI, but also every solution from APIs, robotic process automation (RPA), no-code/low-code development platforms, and advanced workflow solutions such as ServiceNow, SuccessFactors, and other large enterprise applications.
- As with every new, bright and shiny tool, the most success will come when it is leveraged with purpose. Too often something new will be introduced to work only for it to fail to deliver - SharePoint comes to mind for so many companies. Intelligent Transformation isn't an IT initiative or project; it is a strategic element of the full business plan. Intelligent Transformation requires its own leader, a curator and visionary. This leader works horizontally across the company and finds every opportunity to connect processes using intelligent automation solutions. Then ensures stability by curating over time and through future change and disruption.
- Intelligent Transformation can have significant financial benefits. It should be considered a capital expenditure as the cost and benefit will both be multi-year. Success will manifest as contributions to the company profit margins through process improvements, elimination of waste, greater customer satisfaction, improved employee satisfaction, and more.
