World Food Day 2023
The importance of water is not only because life originated in water, but it also forms a driving force for people, and economies and forms the foundation of our food!
Water constitutes 50 per cent of the human body. Although, the earth's surface covers 71 per cent of water, only 2.50 per cent of water is fresh which is suitable for household consumption, agricultural as well as industrial uses.?
Urbanization, and climatic change, can lead to increasing stress on water resources. In addition to the above, due to rapid population growth, improper utilization of water and over-extraction of groundwater resources, the per-person availability of freshwater has declined to 20 per cent.?
Around 2.4 billion people live in countries where 80 per cent of the available water is being used.? Also, many smallholder farmers, migrant workers, and refugees struggle to meet their daily requirements for water. Lack of water affects the quality of produce which indirectly affects the nutritional quality of produce. Also, a lack of adequate water can cause unhygienic diseases. All these can affect the growth of an individual, and/or nation.?
From this “World Food Day 2023”, let's focus on the effective management of water resources through better utilization in households by adopting practices such as rainwater harvesting, farming by better cropping techniques, and at the industry level through water recycling. As water is food; let us Leave no one behind!
