It is an annual global event celebrated on 5th June, every year to raise awareness and promote action for the protection and preservation of our environment. It serves as a significant platform to engage individuals, communities, governments, and organizations worldwide in positive environmental initiatives.
It was established by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day aims to encourage people to take responsibility for the well-being of the planet and to promote sustainable practices. Each year, a specific theme is chosen to focus attention on a pressing environmental issue. This theme serves as a call to action, inspiring individuals, and communities to take steps towards addressing the identified challenge. The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
World Environment Day provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together and work towards creating a more sustainable and ecologically balanced future. It encourages individuals to reflect on their daily habits and make changes that contribute to a healthier environment. Activities such as tree planting, clean-up campaigns, environmental education programs, and awareness campaigns are organized globally to mark this day.
