World Environment Day 2024: How Pharmaline & Cosmaline are Leading the Way in Sustainability

Pharmaline and Cosmaline , the manufacturing subsidiaries of Malia Group, have been committed to enhancing lives since their inception in the 1980s. Whether through providing accessible and affordable medications or offering highly regarded personal care products, both brands have consistently exceeded expectations by delivering outstanding quality and meeting the diverse needs of consumers.

However, their achievements extend beyond product excellence. Both subsidiaries have demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and planetary well-being. Join us as we explore the steps these sites take to promote sustainability and what lies ahead, ensuring a safe, secure, and sustainable future for generations to come.

Energy Savings Initiatives

Pharmaline currently relies on solar panels to cover up to 40% of its daytime energy needs, with plans to increase this coverage to 65% in early Q3. Cosmaline is expected to reach 40% coverage by the end of July 2024. These plants operate on an on-grid PV system to meet the growing demands of local and international markets. Primary energy consumption includes chillers, machinery, compressors, air handlers, freezers, fans, stability chambers, and other essential production equipment. While solar panels cover daytime energy consumption, additional power sources are required to meet nighttime demands. Given the facilities' size and available resources, maximum reliance on solar energy cannot exceed 65%.

Despite these limitations, we're proud of the energy savings achieved daily. Cosmaline alone saves about 314 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, and Pharmaline exports excess power to the grid, providing clean energy to surrounding homes. Beyond solar panels, we've implemented various energy-saving measures. Upgrading generators with combustion systems reduced CO2 emissions by 92 metric tons annually. Installing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on major pumps prevents energy waste and extends equipment lifespan. Additionally, capturing waste heat from generator exhaust and radiator heat exchangers enhances energy efficiency.

Water Conservation Measures

We've prioritized water conservation by implementing RO water treatment systems to purify production water. Wastewater is collected, purified, and reused, with water counters installed to monitor usage and identify opportunities for reduction. Cosmaline further enhances monitoring and analysis by installing water meters on major outlets, helping identify areas for improvement.

Waste Heat Recovery Projects

Pharmaline and Cosmaline recently launched waste heat recovery projects aiming to generate steam and hot water without boilers, reducing carbon footprint. Although in the early stages, these initiatives are expected to be fully operational by Q4 2024, with an estimated annual CO2 emissions savings of approximately 280 metric tons.

In Conclusion, the commitment of Pharmaline and Cosmaline to sustainability is evident in their comprehensive approach to energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste heat recovery. By prioritizing environmental responsibility, these plants are reducing their carbon footprint and leading the way toward a greener, more sustainable future.
