By Chris Tipping, Marketing Director at The DM Lab
Entrepreneurship is a journey like no other – filled with twists, turns, triumphs, and the occasional tumble. As someone who’s been on this path for years, I’ve seen it all. From running a multi-award-winning digital marketing agency, The DM Lab, to leading one of Herefordshire’s largest football clubs, Belmont Wanderers, to navigating a retail business, Local e Sourced, through the challenges of COVID-19, my entrepreneurial ventures have been nothing short of diverse.
I’ve also had the privilege of serving as a trustee for The Herefordshire Veteran Support Centre and even ventured into the cutting-edge world of NFTs. Some of these initiatives could be considered “successes,” while others were experiments that didn’t turn out quite as planned.
But here’s the thing: every single one of them taught me something valuable.
As we celebrate World Entrepreneur Day, I want to reflect on what I’ve learned along the way – lessons not just about business, but about resilience, growth, and the importance of understanding your why.
1. Success Isn’t Always What It Seems
It’s easy to focus on achievements – awards, accolades, revenue, growth. But not everything goes according to plan, and not every venture ends in triumph. Some projects don’t scale as hoped, some ideas don’t resonate, and some challenges feel insurmountable at the time.
The truth is, entrepreneurship isn’t about having a perfect track record. It’s about taking the experiences, good and bad, and using them to grow. When Local e Sourced helped support local businesses during COVID-19, it was fulfilling in ways no spreadsheet could quantify. When other ventures didn’t quite take off, they still left me with lessons that shaped who I am today.
2. The Real Value Lies in the Lessons
Every step on the entrepreneurial journey – whether it’s launching a business, scaling it, or pivoting – adds to your knowledge. Each challenge forces you to adapt, each failure pushes you to think differently, and each success reminds you why you started. For me, the journey has been about constantly expanding my knowledge and skill set. Whether it’s learning how to lead teams, embracing emerging technologies like NFTs, or understanding how to balance multiple responsibilities, every experience has contributed to my growth.

3. Enjoy the Ride
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the ride itself is what matters most. If you’re constantly chasing outcomes without appreciating the journey, you’ll burn out. From brainstorming ideas to solving problems, from building teams to celebrating wins, it’s the day-to-day moments that make entrepreneurship so rewarding.
Running Belmont Wanderers, for example, has been an incredible journey. Seeing the impact the club has on kids, adults, and the community at large is more fulfilling than any title or achievement could ever be. Similarly, leading The DM Lab allows me to collaborate with amazing clients and push the boundaries of digital marketing every day.
4. Understanding Your “Why” (Simon Sinek)
At the heart of every successful entrepreneur is a clear sense of purpose. Why are you doing what you’re doing? For me, it’s about impact. Whether it’s helping businesses grow, building a community through football, or supporting veterans, every venture I take on has a deeper purpose.
When you understand your “why,” it becomes easier to navigate challenges and stay motivated, even when things get tough. It also helps you focus your energy on what truly matters, rather than getting caught up in fleeting trends or external pressures.
In Celebration of Entrepreneurs Everywhere
On this World Entrepreneur Day, I want to celebrate all the dreamers, doers, and risk-takers out there. To those who have succeeded, failed, pivoted, and kept going – this day is for you.
Remember, entrepreneurship isn’t just about the endgame. It’s about the lessons learned, the growth achieved, and the impact made along the way. So keep learning, keep improving, and, most importantly, enjoy the ride. And if you haven’t yet found your “why,” take some time to reflect on what truly drives you – because that’s where the magic happens.
Here’s to the journey. Here’s to the lessons. Here’s to the ride.
