World Economic Forum and Modern Day Slavery

World Economic Forum (WEF) Roundup on Modern Slavery and Human Rights

"Over 200 million people face forced migration within their countries by 2050 due to sea-level rise, extreme weather events, drought and water scarcity." says the World Economic Forum.

For the last two years, industry leaders and professionals joining Davos replaced direct discussions around modern-day slavery with forced climate change migration, climate-vulnerable communities, unlocking employment for refugees, and a living wage for all. The last time WEF placed modern slavery under the spotlight was in 2020 (Ending Modern Slavery Open Forum, WEF 2020).

In 2023 WEF, the discussions are inherently solution oriented, focusing on the already existing modern-day slavery problems that will eventually worsen with the increasing impact of climate change unless there is a rapid shift towards halting and reversing the effects.?

The realities of modern slavery today are already unacceptable without the issues attached to climate change. Yet, governments and policymakers are slow to act upon human rights and worker's rights abuses despite the common consensus demanding action.?The International Institute of Environment and Development?states climate change is not only increasing vulnerability but is leading to modern slavery.?

In conversations like COP and WEF, modern slavery should be essential to talks about refugees and climate change, especially during the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which happened to be during WEF 2023.

Here is a roundup of WEF talks covering human rights, modern-day slavery, and worker's rights.

?? Climate Vulnerable

?? Human Rights

?? Forced Climate Migration

?? Unlocking Employment for Refugees

?? Cost of Living Crisis

?? A Living Wage for All
