"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." – Robert Swan
World Earth Day is held annually on April 22nd to remind of the value of environmental conservation and serves as a global reminder to people of the value of environmental sustainability and conservation, inspiring action on behalf of a healthier planet and a better future. The day promotes a strong bond with nature and increases awareness while spurring action. The theme for World Earth Day 2024 ‘Planet vs Plastics’ aims to bring attention to the grave issue of plastic pollution and its detrimental effects on the environment.
Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States and Harvard student Denis Hayes came up with the concept for the event in 1970 disturbed by the deteriorating environment in the United States and the massive January 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Earth Day became a global event by 1990. The day is important because it causes us to reframe our perspectives and realise that we are intricately connected to nature rather than existing apart from it. It inspires people to adopt small changes in their lifestyles in order to support environmental causes and build a more sustainable future.
Let us engage to promote awareness of the need to safeguard our planet. We can commit to not using plastics in our homes, alter our lifestyles to leave a smaller carbon footprint, raise awareness on environmental conservation, and much more.
