World Diabetes Day 2023
Every year on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, November 14th, we celebrate World Diabetes Day. This annual United National (UN) Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). It has been recognized as an official UN Day since 2006.
“Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.” - World Health Organization
Diabetes by the Numbers
Diabetes affects more than 37 million Americans, and approximately 1 in 4 do not even know it yet. There are two major forms for diabetes:
Diabetes and Wound Care
“Management of diabetic wounds is one of the largest challenges in our Wound Care Center. They are associated with high morbidity, mortality, and amputation rates among millions of individuals of the diabetic population.” - Wound Care Director ?
According to the CDC, diabetics face several health complications including:
These complications have led to an increase in lower-limb amputations (LLA). The number of hospitalizations from diabetes-related surgical removal of a toe, foot, or leg, have more than doubled since 2009.
The WHO estimates that up to 80% of diabetes-related amputations are preventable and specialized care has been shown to reduce lower-limb amputations by 72%.
MPM Medical is proud to support Amputation Prevention Centers in their efforts to reduce amputation risks.
“Collagen is an essential structural and functional component of the healing wound. One of our preferred choices is MPM Medical’s collagen because it is pure 100% Type 1 collagen. Pure collagen acts as a structural scaffold in tissue, maintains the structural and biological integrity of the extracellular matrix, and regulates many cellular functions from migration and differentiation to protein synthesis. ?It is a vital tool in our healing care plans.” Amputation Prevention Center Director

Sir Fredrick Banting co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best and JJR Macleod at the University of Toronto in the early 1920. It was later purified by James B Collip.
Before the discovery of insulin, a diagnosis in diabetes was a death sentence. Since 1922, tens of millions of lives have been saved form insulin.
“They worked tirelessly to discover insulin but also sacrificed fortune in the interests of the common good.” – Penn Today
