World Day Against Trafficking
On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, DIWA would like to highlight the central importance of industry and national standards on ethical recruitment.? As an organization, we were among the first to link recruitment fees to debt bondage, forced labour and trafficking for labour exploitation.? We were also among the first to advocate for and work towards ethical recruitment as a longer-lasting solution to tackle the enormity of the problem- 28 million people in modern slavery today.?
Our sister organization, the Fair Hiring Initiative has developed and tested ethical recruitment models including the creation of On The Level, a certification program for recruitment agencies. We understand that trafficking is a complex issue, and we continue to work in partnership to contribute to multistakeholder efforts that address the drivers of trafficking while pursuing remediation for victims. In sectors where workers are at high risk of modern slavery, we have seen that preventative mechanism can and do work to end trafficking.
