The World Community Tourism Summit: A Journey Through Peru

Hey there, fellow wanderers! ?? I find myself amid the rich tapestry of Peru, attending the GX Event - The World Community Tourism Summit. It's been an awe-inspiring ride, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you! ???? #WorldTourismDay

The Power of Tourism:?The summit isn't just an event; it's a gathering of souls passionate about the symbiotic relationship between travellers and local cultures. It's the bridge that connects hearts across continents.

Peru: A Mosaic of Challenges & Triumphs?Peru is a storybook of highs and lows. This nation has seen everything from grappling with the pandemic to socio-political turbulences and even the short-lived closure of Machu Picchu. Yet, its spirit remains unbroken.

Enter Planeterra - an initiative determined to light up the pathways for local communities, allowing them to harness the full potential of tourism. Many journey to Machu Picchu, oblivious to the vibrant cultures that line the path. But thanks to G Adventures and Planeterra, communities are leveraging tourism to preserve and promote indigenous crafts, such as weaving, and secure a promising future for their youth.

Our Memorable Visits in the Scared Valley and Beyond

  1. Wooving Company in Caccaccullo:?Located at a breathtaking 3600 hm, this is where tradition meets transformation. While men have historically held sway on the Inca trail, Planeterra's intervention now empowers women to flaunt their skills to tourists, radically growing their community life.
  2. The Potato Park - inspired by Pachamama:?Delving into the spiritual depths where the ancient Incas, and now the local custodians, harmoniously bond with Mother Earth. Our journey led us to an awe-inspiring encounter with 1367 potato varieties. This isn't just a display; it's a profound tribute to Peru's immense biodiversity. Their mission? To showcase this rich biodiversity and conserve the invaluable seeds for future generations.
  3. Ceramic and Esplanadas:?Stepping into a haven for art enthusiasts! The showcased pottery techniques seamlessly blended tradition with innovation. And trust me, their handcrafted ceramic utensils are a collector's dream.
  4. Hike & Camp at the Lares trek:?An exhilarating hike, taking us above 4200 m altitude. The altitude did test some, but nature's grandeur and pristine weather fueled our spirits. Our journey culminated in Cancha, our Camp for the night. Camping here was transformative - fostering connections, urging us to unplug and live in the present.
  5. "Must Stop"?Parwa Restaurant:?An exemplary community tourism venture that stands as a testament to the brilliance of social enterprise in reshaping societies.

Want to experience Peru now? You def. should explore the country.

Key Takeaways

  1. Preservation Over Transformation:?Local communities are the heartbeat of their regions. It's vital to respect and support their beliefs rather than impose ours.
  2. Active Engagement:?Immersing ourselves, observing without bias, and genuinely connecting are essential.
  3. Building Trust:?Offering infrastructural support tailored to their distinct needs is paramount.
  4. Beyond Monetary Transactions:?True assistance isn't merely financial. It's about strategic, purpose-driven aid, enabling communities to organize and thrive on their terms.
