World-Class Action Sports Competition In China

World-Class Action Sports Competition Awards Twenty Seven Medals to Athletes Represented by Ten Countries

Four of the Medals Awarded to One Athlete; Kia World Extreme Games Concludes Today with Skateboard Street, BMX Mini Mega and Men’s Speed Climbing

Shanghai, China — As promised, Kia World Extreme Games delivered on so many levels as the event opened at the Oriental Pearl Tower and concluded today at Jiangwan Stadium. New venues, new courses and new talent were all part of the event’s success as it expanded to eight days in three venues with more than 75,000 fans in attendance. History was made during the event with Australia’s Vince Byron landing two tricks that have never been done before on the vert and the mini mega giving him the title of most winning gold medalist in the history of Kia World Extreme Games with six gold medals in three years. The event saw several ‘firsts’ in the event history with skateboarder Alana Smith becoming the first female to compete alongside the men in Mini Mega, first time the event has moved downtown where vert competition took place in front of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the event welcomed the debut of the Asian Skate Street Invitational opening doors to talent from Asian countries.

“There are so many elements that raised this year’s Kia World Extreme Games to a whole new level,” said Hass Aminian, action sports director, World Sports Group. “Adding two new venues made the competitions exciting with multiple backdrops for our fans watching from home while engaging new spectators from all over China. And world-class venues attract world-class athletes, and this year we had the highest caliber of talent across the globe competing here in Shanghai.”

New to the event this year was the KIC Plaza venue used for the street competition with new elements built into existing structures. The addition attracted the top street skaters from all over the world to compete, and the design and unique layout did not disappoint. Thirteen skaters started in the final, and the field was narrowed down to six which included Indonesia’s Sanggoe Tanjung.

“Having the street course flow downhill made me a little unsure because it is different than what I’ve ever skated,” said Brazil’s Felipe Gustavo who became very comfortable with the course and landed gold. “I’ve now been in Shanghai for a month to skate the streets all over the city and stayed to compete at my first Kia World Extreme Games - always a good time to skate and hang out with my skateboard community. This is my fifth time in Shanghai, and I just love it and all the great places to skate.”

BMX Mini Mega had a ten-rider final with talent from Australia, Honduras and USA. Shanghai witnessed history when Australia’s returning gold medalist, Vince Byron, landed the first ever 540 flair on the mini mega. Earlier in the week in the BMX Vert competition, Bryon landed the same trick making it the first time it was landed in a vert contest giving him another gold. USA rounded out the podium with only a half of a point difference with Zack Warden and Mykel Larrin winning silver and bronze, respectively.

Men’s Speed Climbing started with 20 climbers that was narrowed down to the top 16 where four Chinese climbers qualified. The day belonged to the Russians as they swept the podium with 19-year-old Sergei Luzhetskii taking the top honor at his first Kia World Extreme Games and fellow countrymen Stanislav Kokorin and Sergei Sinitcyn closed behind for silver and bronze, respectively.
