My story began 14 years ago, when I was diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer at the age of 37. As a single mother to a 13 year old girl, I thought my life was coming to an end.

After several tests and biopsies, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction this was followed by the chemotherapy medication called Doxorubicin better known as the “red devil” and resulted in my hair falling out within 3 weeks. I also received Herceptin treatments and a total of 37 chemotherapy sessions.

Eventually, I was in remission however my journey was far from over. For the 10 years that followed I had to continue seeing my oncologist every 3 months for blood test and the Tamoxifen injections. I currently see the oncologist every 6 months for blood tests.

It was a long and hard road, but through the glory of God, I get to tell my story. CANcer can be beaten and I want to remind anyone going through a similar journey to never give up hope and to always have faith.

As someone who has personally experienced the impact of breast cancer, I understand the importance of raising awareness and encouraging early detection. -Teresa Schoeman

11 years ago, at the age of 42 thinking I was in the prime of my health, I was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine check-up revealed a lump in my breast. I underwent a double mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy, followed by another operation two years later.

The journey was difficult, but it also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of taking care of our health and being aware of our bodies. Early detection is key in the fight against cancer, and can greatly improve outcomes for those affected by the disease.

It's been 11 years since my diagnosis, and I am grateful to report that I am still in remission. I continue to visit my oncologist annually for check-ups, and I remind others to do the same. Cancer does not discriminate and affects people of all ages, races, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

It's crucial to understand that cancer can be caught early, and with awareness, the outcome can be positive. We must continue to spread the word and encourage regular check-ups to help prevent and combat cancer.?- Dawn Van Wyk

Mind over matter. Cancer can be beaten.

We plan for our future, unaware of the unexpected twists that may come our way. On August 18th 2022 I went to the doctor because I noticed some blood in my stool and after a few tests; the doctor came back with the news that I had colon cancer. Breaking the news to my family, especially my 10-year-old son was one of the hardest things I had to do. I remember his first question was, “Mom are you going to die.” The next 2 weeks were filled with more tests and trying to understand everything that was happening. The one thing that I appreciated about the whole process was my doctor's total transparency with everything.

I had my first surgery on September 3rd, 2022, and I have never experienced pain like that before. When I woke up, I saw my stomach stapled together and a colostomy bag, something I never thought I would have to deal with at the age of 40. The transition from being active to lying down for long periods of time was difficult and got to me on an emotional level.

I am currently preparing for the reversal of the colostomy, which is a long process, and extremely draining, both mentally and physically. Despite all of this, I am determined to maintain some sense of normality for my kids. My faith and belief in a full life keeps me going.

I've also learned that when life hits its lows, it's then that you truly see the strength and love of the people around you. I have the best support system anyone could ask for - my family which include the Ironman 4x4 Africa team, and Partquip Group they have been my rock. I truly appreciate their unwavering support, and I am grateful for every call and message I receive from them.

Stay in the fight. - Monique Patel
