World Cancer Day: A Healthy Lifestyle, Timely Screening, and Unwavering Courage Are the Real Cure

"Stay Healthy, Stay Aware" is the mantra to defeat cancer, reiterated every year on February 4th as "World Cancer Day." The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about cancer, share preventive measures, and honour the bravery of those fighting this severe disease. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on how a healthy lifestyle, timely screening, and strong willpower can prevent cancer.

The importance of diet in cancer prevention is significant.

A healthy diet strengthens our bodies and develops the ability to fight life-threatening diseases like cancer. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of cancer:

  1. ? Consumption of colourful fruits and vegetables: carrots, broccoli, berries, and spinach are rich in vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, which help combat harmful substances in the body.
  2. Fibre-Rich Diet: Whole grains, pulses, and seeds improve digestion and reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
  3. Natural and Fresh Foods: Prioritise fresh fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals over processed foods.
  4. Limited Sugar and Fat Intake: High-sugar and high-fat foods can lead to obesity, increasing the risk of cancer.
  5. Staying Hydrated: Drinking enough water helps flush out toxins from the body.

The Importance of Timely Screening

Early detection and screening can identify cancer initially, increasing the chances of successful treatment. Tests like mammography, Pap smear, and colonoscopy can help detect breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer.

For instance, Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu faced stage-4 cancer and overcame it through timely screening and lifestyle changes. Her story is a symbol of courage and awareness.

Budget 2025: Government's New Steps to Fight Cancer

The recently presented Union Budget 2025-26 includes significant provisions to tackle severe diseases like cancer. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that 36 life-saving drugs used to treat cancer and rare diseases will be completely exempt from essential customs duty, making these medicines more affordable and accessible.

Additionally, plans are underway to establish cancer day-care centres in all district hospitals over the next three years, with 200 centres expected to open in the current financial year. This initiative aims to provide essential services like chemotherapy locally, reducing patients' need to travel to major cities.

Through these measures, the government strives to make cancer treatment more affordable and accessible, helping the general public combat this severe disease.

The Courage to Fight the Disease

Mental strength and resilience are the most critical weapons in the battle against cancer. Many people have successfully defeated this disease with their courage and determination:

  • Yuvraj Singh: The Indian cricketer battled cancer and made a remarkable comeback in his career, inspiring many.
  • Sunita (name changed): A 45-year-old woman from Rajasthan diagnosed with breast cancer. With family support and medical guidance, she began treatment. Through regular exercise, yoga, and a positive mindset, she is now completely healthy and motivates others.
  • Navjot Singh Sidhu: Former cricketer and politician who stood strong with his wife, Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, during her battle with cancer, showing resilience and a positive outlook.
  • Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu: Not only did she defeat cancer, but she also inspired many others with her experiences.

These examples clearly demonstrate that with timely screening, proper nutrition, and a strong mindset, we can not only fight cancer but also conquer it. This day teaches us never to lose hope and courage because every victory begins with belief.
