Cancer: A diagnosis like no other?
?
Cancer is more than just a #medical diagnosis—it’s a deeply personal matter. That’s why a people-centred approach to cancer care that fully integrates each individual’s unique needs, with compassion and empathy, leads to the best health outcomes.??
Because people are more. More than a diagnosis. More than a #disease. More than a patient. More than a caregiver.?
The emotional, physiological, psychological and financial impact of cancer makes it a diagnosis like no other, profoundly affecting an individual, a family, the workplace and employer, the community and society.?
One in two of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lives. The other 50% of us will become a caregiver.???
We know that 1 in 4 cancers are preventable with lifestyle and health behaviour changes.?
That’s why the UKIHCA, as the professional association for health coaching, is proud to support and participate in World Cancer Day, an international day observed every 4 February to raise awareness about #cancer, encourage its prevention, and mobilise action to address the global cancer epidemic.??
The theme for World Cancer Day 2025 is “United by Unique” and will explore different dimensions of people-centred cancer care and new ways of making a difference.???
Everyone has unique needs, unique perspectives, and a unique story to tell, yet people touched by cancer are united in a shared ambition to lower the cancer burden, to see cancer treated successfully, and to lead better lives with cancer.??
With these thoughts in mind, on World Cancer Day 2025 we are sharing these important resources:
Oncio’s aim is to provide high quality app-based resources for people with cancer, supporting best clinical practice and research in integrative oncology (IO). Oncio strongly believes that integrative oncology should be part of the standard of cancer care, and Oncio CIC has been created to support this mission.?
“As a consultant clinical oncologist, medical director and a professional health coach, I see health coaching as an integral part of integrative medicine and integrative oncology. It’s a uniquely self-empowering and valuable approach, supporting people – wherever they are in their cancer journey - to actively participate in their own care and to improve their health and wellbeing, with sustainable lifestyle choices that are important to them”. ?Dr Penny Kechagioglou, Co-Founder Oncio CIC & UKIHCA- Clinical Affairs Advisor.
Joining hands for Cancer across the Pond?
On World Cancer Day 2025, the Health Coaching Integrative Oncology Special Interest Group (SIG) at the Society of Integrative Oncology (SIO) and the British Society of Integrative Oncology are excited to be joining hands to improve access to professional health coaching for individuals facing or living with a cancer diagnosis.
The aim of the Special Interest Group is to highlight the essential and evidence-based role that health coaching plays within integrative oncology and to advance its integration within oncology.
The Group will be working on three cornerstone programmes:
·????? Enhancing health coaching awareness within integrative oncology
·????? Establishing health coaching advanced competencies in integrative oncology
·????? Creating pathways for health professionals to become certified in health coaching for cancer care, or to integrate health coaching skills into their practices.
