World Bipolar Day- 30th March

World Bipolar Day is celebrated every year on March 30th, which is the birthday of the famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. The day is observed to raise awareness about bipolar disorder, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Van Gogh was diagnosed with bipolar disorder posthumously, and his painting "The Starry Night" is considered a masterpiece despite being created during a time of psychiatric distress.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 40 million people around the world experience bipolar disorder. In India, a national mental health survey conducted in 2016 found that about 1 in 150 people or 0.3 percent of the population live with bipolar disorder, and 70 percent of those individuals remain untreated.

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes changes in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. People with bipolar disorder experience intense emotional states that typically occur during distinct periods of days to weeks, called mood episodes. These episodes are categorized as manic/hypomanic (abnormally happy or irritable mood) or depressive (sad mood). When treated, people with bipolar disorder can lead full and productive lives.

However, the mood swings caused by bipolar disorder can impact personal, occupational, and social functions, and disrupt a person's relationships with loved ones. This can cause significant challenges in the workplace, including difficulty concentrating, irritability, mood swings, and fatigue, among other symptoms. These symptoms can interfere with a person's ability to perform their job, which may lead to job loss and financial strain. Treatment for bipolar disorder typically includes medications such as mood stabilizers and psychotherapy (talk therapy). Support groups for patients and families can also be helpful.

It is important to note that mental health disorders, including bipolar disorder, are no longer stigmatized, and effective treatments are available. Insurance companies are also required to make provision for medical insurance for the treatment of mental illness under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. Health insurance can cover treatment expenses, while disability income protection insurance can cover the loss of income due to the specified mental health condition.

Disability income protection insurance can be a valuable resource for individuals with bipolar disorder, as it provides financial assistance when they are unable to work due to their condition. The insurance can provide coverage for lost income and other financial losses that result from an inability to work, allowing individuals with bipolar disorder to maintain their financial stability and independence.

Disability insurance can help alleviate some of the financial burden associated with job loss by providing income replacement during periods of disability. This can help individuals with bipolar disorder maintain their standard of living and avoid financial stress.

On World Bipolar Day, it is essential to increase awareness and encourage an empathetic approach towards people with bipolar disorder or any mental health condition. This can decrease the socio-economic burden of the condition and help individuals with bipolar disorder lead full and productive lives. Overall, disability insurance can be an important safety net for individuals with bipolar disorder, providing financial support and helping to reduce the impact of the condition on their daily lives.
