Chief Executive's message

Leaving two years of pandemic behind, we couldn’t be more excited about the busy months ahead full of invaluable opportunities to raise the profile of biogas globally.

At the end of this month, I will be travelling to Washington to address the?Global Methane, Climate and Clean Air Forum 2022. Jointly organised by the UN Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI), the Forum will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, technical experts and researchers from around the world to address opportunities to tackle methane emissions in order to protect the climate and improve air quality.

Biogas is critical to the delivery of the Global Methane Pledge as the waste sector is the third largest source of man-made (anthropogenic) methane emissions and growing rapidly. I will meet with all relevant organisations that will be in Washington to discuss collaboration on growing the biogas sector and share with them WBA’s upcoming Insight report on methane emissions and organic waste management.

In October, I will then travel to Denmark and South Africa to speak at biogas conferences, organised by the Energistyrelsen and the SABIA Southern African Biogas Industry Association respectively. While in South Africa, I will also attend WasteCon and, thanks to modern technology,?speak at the 2nd International Conference on Accelerating Stop Food Loss and Waste for a Net-zero Future in Cairo. I would like to meet with as many of you as possible during these business trips – if you are based in any of these countries, please contact Giulia Ceccarelli, External Affairs Lead, at?[email protected].

The wait for COP27 - UN Climate Change Conference is soon over. Following weeks of anticipation, the UNFCCC has confirmed that we are to have a WBA stand in the Blue Zone of COP27, where we will advocate for a future where organic wastes are seen as resources and biogas is a key component of the energy transition. We are also hoping to host our own side event at COP, but our application’s results will come out at the end of this week. Fingers crossed!

What Do You Think is the Biggest Challenge the Biogas Industry is Currently Facing Across the Globe?

Take this survey and help us identify the problems that are currently inhibiting the growth of the industry.

Note that we are specifically requesting science and technology breakthroughs that would have a major impact in the sector, in areas where you feel the present scientific understanding or available technologies are not adequate. As such important aspects such as subsidies, access to finance, a skilled workforce etc are out-of-scope for this survey.

We intend to publish these Grand Challenges to inspire and provide direction to academics and research-intensive companies to develop the next generation of technologies to support our sector.?
