World Biogas Association
We are the global trade association for the biogas, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors
Chief Executive's message
Last week, I travelled to Washington DC to speak and attend the?Global Methane, Climate and Clean Air Forum 2022.?The Forum - jointly organised by the UN Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) – built on the momentum ignited by the Global Methane Pledge to spur increased action in tackling methane from the policy makers in attendance.
On the last day of the Forum, Giulia Ceccarelli, WBA’s External Affairs Lead, and I presented in two different sessions on the huge role that organic wastes and biogas play in delivering the Global Methane Pledge, given that 19% of all anthropogenic methane emissions come from manure management, municipal solid waste, and wastewater.
At the Forum, we had meetings with many relevant organisations such as the GMI, CCAC, CCAP, GAIA, IGSD, Global Methane Hub, WRI, USA EPA and others to discuss areas for collaboration. We will partner with some of them to submit proposals to the CCAC, the Global Methane Hub and the Green Climate Fund for funding of key projects that can significantly accelerate the deployment of biogas globally.
We are also very excited that the Egyptian Government, host of COP27, is planning to launch the?Global Waste Initiative 50?by 2050?at the COP. The initiative will commit the African continent to recycle and treat 50% of its waste by 2050. In many parts of the continent, about 50% of waste is organic So this is a huge opportunity to develop the biogas industry in the region. WBA is joining one of the working groups that the Egyptian Government is establishing to deliver on the initiative to make sure that biogas is recognised as critical to achieving this ambitious target.

New International Standard: ISO - ISO/DTS 2610 - Analysis of Natural Gas - Biomethane - Determination of Amines Content
This document specifies the determination of the concentration of alkanolamines in biomethane. The measurement method involves thermal desorption gas chromatography with flame ionization and/or mass spectrometry detectors (TD-GC-MS/FID).?

WBA Working Groups – Update?
WBA has 4 main working groups dedicated to addressing some of the biggest issues faced by the biogas community. Our working groups are for like-minded professionals from around the biogas industry to come together and brainstorm how to solve these issues while also learning from other experts in the industry. Here are some of the updates from our working groups.

Ireland Biogas Growth Must Focus on Efficiency
Recent comments by ADBA chairman Chris Hunhe and Irish environment minister Eamon Ryan are positive for the expansion of renewable, green biogas production across the island of Ireland, but to maximise the benefits of increased anaerobic digestion capacity, operating efficiency and the use of digestate must be fully considered.?
