World Bank & FBR's Digitalization Push for Tax Systems Reform

In a meeting with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Amjed Zubair Tiwana, World Bank Vice President Martin Raiser commended the FBR's commitment to digitalizing tax administration. The World Bank expressed strong support for the FBR's reform agenda, particularly initiatives undertaken under the Pakistan Raises Revenue Project.

The FBR presented a detailed overview of its reform efforts, highlighting projects aimed at sales tax harmonization, a track and trace system, and bolstering the FBR's information and communication technology (ICT) capabilities.

Digitalization Key to Efficient Tax Collection

Raiser acknowledged the FBR's focus on digitalizing tax administration, emphasizing the potential for these initiatives to significantly enhance revenue collection. He advocated for a long-term strategy that combines digitalization with a gradual reduction in tax exemptions. Raiser suggested that social safety nets and a consumption-based sales tax system could be implemented alongside the exemption reduction plan.

Collaboration for Broad-Based Tax Administration

Chairman Tiwana highlighted the FBR's collaborative approach with stakeholders to achieve broad-based tax administration. He emphasized that digitalization is not just about revenue collection, but also about empowering the FBR to make informed decisions for sustainable revenue growth.

The World Bank, through Martin Raiser, expressed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the FBR in support of its ongoing digitalization drive. This collaboration positions the FBR to leverage the World Bank's expertise and resources to achieve its reform goals.

Well these reforms are vital for the survival of Pakistan. I wish each institution must be digitized in order to curb bribes. But how will you collect tax from the Armed Forces since they have guns and can ruin your planes in seconds.
