?? World Autism Day 2023 ??

It is World Autism Day today! ??? 2nd April holds a significant meaning and place for me. As some of you may have already known, my son falls within this spectrum. I am always happy to share about him and how we’re coping as well as parents.?

This year’s theme is “Transforming the narrative: Contributions at home, at work, in the arts and in policymaking”. It is a call to raise awareness about autism, accepting and supporting autistic people in the society and workplace. The theme this year resonates so much with what I had in mind to write this article.?

It is important to remember the significant impact that autism has on families and especially on parents. Raising a child with autism comes with unique challenges that can often be overwhelming, and these challenges can extend into the workplace.?

I must say that I am truly blessed with an amazing leader and colleagues who are always open to listening, understanding and accommodating to the challenges and joy I experience raising an autistic child. My son is non-verbal and there are some interesting challenges I face on a day to day basis. However, with the support I have been receiving at work, though I don’t say it much, I appreciate each one of my colleagues for somehow helping me cope and move on.?

So what can you do as an employer or a colleague to an autism parent or someone who falls within this spectrum at work? Here are some ways that employers and leaders can support parents raising children with autism, as well as tips for self-resiliency for parents themselves:

  1. Flexibility: Employers should provide parents with flexible work hours or the option to work from home. This can be especially helpful for parents who may need to attend therapy sessions, appointments or meetings related to their child's needs.?
  2. Understanding and empathy: Employers & colleagues should seek to understand the challenges faced by parents of children with autism and provide support in whatever way possible. This may include offering access to counselling services, support groups, or special accommodations in the workplace. Sometimes a simple chat or diverting our bad day with happy thoughts helps in many ways you may not even know. :)
  3. Resources and training: Employers should provide resources and training to help parents manage their child's needs. This could include workshops on autism, webinars on strategies for managing stress, or access to an employee assistance program that provides counselling or support services. EAP can be a good platform for many parents to look at and read the materials provided for additional knowledge.?

Leader's Role in Supporting:

  1. Communication: Leaders should communicate with parents to understand their needs and concerns, and work collaboratively to find solutions. Regular check-ins can be helpful to stay on top of any changes or updates related to the child's needs.
  2. Advocacy: Leaders should advocate for policies that support families with children with autism, such as extended family leave or flexible work arrangements.
  3. Education: Leaders should educate themselves and their teams about autism, including the challenges faced by families and ways to provide support.

Self-Resiliency for Parents:

  1. Self-care: Parents should prioritize self-care, including getting enough rest, exercise, and eating a healthy diet. Taking breaks and engaging in activities that bring joy can also help with managing stress and burnout.
  2. Support networks: Building a support network of other parents, family members, or friends who understand the challenges of raising a child with autism can be helpful. This network can provide emotional support and practical advice.
  3. Asking for help: It's important for parents to recognize when they need help and to ask for it. This may mean asking for help from family members, friends, or seeking professional support

In conclusion, supporting parents raising children with autism requires a collaborative effort between employers, leaders, and parents themselves. By providing flexibility, resources, and understanding, employers can help alleviate some of the stress and challenges faced by parents. Leaders can play a role in advocating for policies that support families and educating themselves and their teams about autism. For parents, prioritizing self-care, building a support network, and asking for help when needed can help with building resiliency and managing the challenges of raising a child with autism.

Spread love and kindness always!

Most importantly, we never expect sympathy from our leaders and colleagues. Instead, we seek for support, understanding and respect at work place. You never know what’s running in our mind and a little bit of joy and kindness will definitely make our day. So remember to be kind and spread joy always!

If you are from an Ausome family, feel free to be connected and I am very much happy to share more information and learn from you too!?Do wear blue to show your support for Autism Awareness day today!
