World Autism Awareness Day 2021 - Let's Encourage More Inclusiveness in Our Schools
Both my children have had the distinct PRIVILEGE of attending an inclusive school. A school environment where both typical children and children with special educational needs learn together in the SAME classroom. Yes - they played, ate lunch, worked with and learnt with other children living with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome etc
This means from a young age my children had a heightened awareness that WE MAY BE DIFFERENT BUT WE ALL HAVE THE SAME RIGHT to be present, seen, heard and to learn. As a parent in an inclusive school, I have learnt this too and more.
Isn’t the true joy of the educator and school the ability to impart knowledge and skills in spite of personal challenges; using a medium, programme and timeline suited to the individual child?
I CELEBRATE the hard work of inclusive schools in Nigeria. Also for centres dedicated to working with children with special educational needs. It is my prayer that you continue to receive the strength, wisdom and resources to stay the course.
For those educators still unsure of their capacity to provide this MUCH NEEDED support to many families, BE ENCOURAGED. Start with small steps - research, training, add qualified SEN professionals to your team etc.
With your passion for ALL children and a willingness to make adjustments to your school provision and environment, more and more families can find the support and school home that they need.
