World Autism Awareness Day 2020 — Become an ‘Army of the Kind’
Today is World Autism Awareness Day and I feel the importance of this message now more than ever. Given that most of us are experiencing the emotional toll of isolation and loneliness during this pandemic — this is what many on the autism spectrum deal with each and every day of their lives. 2020 CDC data confirms that autism currently affects 1 in 54 children, 70% of whom are boys. As most of you know my brother Paulie has autism. The world I’ve been able to see through his eyes has offered a perspective of reality that has always reminded me that kindness is king.
On a recent trip to Miami, Paulie begged me to stop by the Art Deco Historic District gift shop. Why? So he could pick up postcards to mail to friends and family to say hello from our little adventure. He then spent over two hours in our hotel room carefully crafting each note. His dedication, his kindness struck me as this beautiful dichotomy. Paulie sends these notes every year but I don’t think he’s ever received one in return.
Every once in a while Paulie gets a call or text from a friend of family member and his excitement fuels him for days. The smallest, seemingly effortless act can have the greatest impact on him.
One of my favorite quotes is from Cleveland Amory, an animal rights activist from the 1960’s. He said, “what we need is a new kind of army, an army of the kind”. I’m enlivened by the idea of mobilizing a kindness army, especially during these times, especially today. Kindness rooted in action.
My challenge to you today: if there is anyone in your life with autism or special needs, give them a call. If there is anyone in your life who is lonely, shower them with kindness. The smallest act of love can create a ripple effect beyond your wildest dreams.
